Canon CL 8-120mm f/1,4 15x Macro Zoom Video EX1 EX2

I know, that's the forum for SLR lenses ... but here my question

first of all, let me thanks everyone for the fabulous site, it has solve a thousand of questions before I had on photography, here one new that I hadn't found reply yet

Would it be possible to mount in some way this CL lenses in a canon eos550 ?

looking to the specifications, 8mm, and Macro, that would be a nice addition to the list of my lenses, and I see no lenses with this sort of characteristic for canon SLR. Moreover, the price, around 150€, get nice

I do not expect a great quality (again price), but to shot few 8mm pictures would be enough.

What about mount compatibility and focus thing ?

thanks in advance.

It is a lens designed for a very small video camera sensor. It could project only a small spot on the center of an APS-C sensor.

a little google with canon CL 8-120mm shows that
it's for a much smaller sensor.

Also, it uses the VL lens mount system (20mm mount to sensor), which allows EF lenses to be mounted, meaning the VL mount is shorter than the EF mount (44mm).

Consequently, you can't mount VL lenses on EF mount.

thanks in advance.

thanks, and so fast (you ruin my expectation ...)

so, that's the way video cameras gets so high F numbers, with small sensors. Indeed no need to shoot video with 18 megapixels, make sesnse.

Thanks

By the way, is any way to open all replies at once here in the forums? with no need to goe "one next" after another?

I started in the 50's - my first picture was taken with a Leica and hooked me for life. I no longer use my Leicas, but I am still taking pictures. Some things never change.

However can I mount my VL lens on a video camera (c mount )? I see no reason not to have an adaptor

There should be a button that says "flat" or "threaded" towards the top of the page next to the forum button. Click that and you'll get the list of replies.

Good afternoon. The Canon CL 8-120mm lens combined with the Runcam eagle 2 course camera, 1 / 1.8 matrix. He removed the brains from the lens, the diaphragm is manual. Image picture on tv / monitor via A / V in. The result pleased the night with a starry sky and a daytime search for objects (ufo) in the sky. No hot mirror filter. I use the day Ir 850nm 72mm. The best result would be with a runcam night eagle 2 camera with 0.00001lux. Good luck to all.

Hi, I purchased the CL 8-120mm in hopes of doing what the op wanted to do. Now that I see that it’s not possible I was wondering if you would be able to run me through your project and/or post a photo in English.

thanks!

If I am not mistaken, the CL [VL] lens set was for the Canon L1 Cameras which were standard def Hi8 in the 90s

Just FYI - this lens was designed for and only used on the Canon L1 hi8 cameras in the 90s. It doesn't fit any other camera.

The OP that you replied to has not been active on DPR since posting this thread more than 9 years ago. It seems likely that the question he asked back (which was answered in 2012) then is no longer relevant.

I also found this in some Russian forum and translated it. If it’s not the same dude who did this in the photo, then the solution is very similar. -

“cool lens, very underestimated. And the whole problem is in the brains of the lens, it understands only the video camera - its mother.
But it’s fixable.
I solved this very simple problem.
I disassembled, threw out the brain board, after biting out the 7-pin connector from it, threw out a kind of electric magnet or a stepper motor (dunno) - a diaphragm control with a bunch of wires.
By the way, the diaphragm without supplying a voltage is always closed. Brought out the slider to control the diaphragm manually. Two engines: focus and zoom soldered to the 7-pin connector and connected to the block. I made an adapter with 4 motor control contacts.
This lens is for 1/2, 1/1.8 matrix size. As a camera, I use a runcam heading for a copter with an analog video output directly to the monitor. Similar lenses for outdoor cameras are much more expensive. On ebay they are given away for a penny. If you do not want to bother with the adapter, take the converter and remove it from there. Something like this.”

I hope this helps someone.
