x100 samples and thoughts from a 5d2 user

Hi guys,

I got an x100 just before Christmas last year and have just started to get my head around the little thing.

My general camera is a 5d2 with a reasonable selection of lenses (see my profile if you want more details). I have done a few weddings and other paid work, and was happy persisting with lugging the camera and lenses with me to things (generally a small bag with a couple of primes and a 70-200mm), and overseas etc etc. It does tend to be a pain lugging this around, but I wasn't happy with anything less than as good IQ as I could get. I wasn't interested in point and shoots, ant not in a 4/3 or other interchangeable system. Consequently my camera wasn't always with me and shots that I would see when I was cameraless would go begging.....

So enter the x100. From what I could see the IQ was good (from the reviews), the size was right, the look was good (not that that is a big selection point, but if you're carrying it around it doesn't hurt right...) and most importantly for me it has a large enough sensor, good high ISO (from the reviews) and an effective 35mm focal length - which is my favorite working range on my 5d2. So it was a no brainer.

I've been shooting in either Av mode or occasionally Tv mode. Set the Auto ISO upper limit to 3200 and central focal point fixed for auto, JPG only and tweaking off the exposure comp. I've been carrying it with me to work in the city (Melbourne) and shooting what I see. I have to say i'm very impressed, and it is doing exactly what i wanted it to do. The shallow DOF is great, IQ is great, discreet-ness is great (which is good if you use it for street photog - what I was after as I don't generally use the 5d2 for this). As an aside people have been asking if it is a film camera and are surprised when I show them the images, more than once i've been asked if it is a leica - funny for a $1k camera.

I havn't played much with the film simulation modes, but is a nice feature I think, and the colours straight of of camera seem good on the JPGs.

An extra bonus is the onboard flash which is a feature missing from the recently announced xpro camera. I think it is a good thing to have built into a camera of this size.

If you are interested in how I usually shoot have a look at my flickr sets.

Anyway enough rambling....time for some pics....

I've converted to B&W using silver efex pro straight from the JPG, havn't mucked around with the B&W in camera.

C&C welcome

Re: x100 samples and thoughts from a 5d2 user

cheers for all the comments guys. Personally I can't decide if my favorite is #2 or #7.

and yes Melbourne has plenty of good stuff to shoot.

with regards to why I've only been shooting JPG so far it is twofold....

1 the JPGs have been very good and the exposure in Av or Tv is pretty spot on.

2 i work in aperture 2 at the moment and the raw converter for aperture means i need aperture 3 - just havn't upgraded yet, and i can't be bothered working with the supplied raw engine from fuji. lazy but true.

cheers.

Re: x100 samples and thoughts from a 5d2 user

cheers Trevor.

one more thing I forgot to add. I got the x100 thumbs up and i'm not convinced. It doesn't move the thumb postition far enough out towards the shutter. so feels a bit awkward. also doesn't fit within my el chealpo knockoff case that I bought either.

just my initial impressions from first few tries. maybe it'll grow on me.

Great shots, and many thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience.

One question regarding DoF since you mentioned this - I know that crop sensor cameras have more DoF than full frames at equivalent apertures, but have you noticed a significant difference in this regard between the X100 and your 5Dmk2?

I'm guessing not, but I thought I'd ask since this is my main drive towards eventually getting a full frame camera.

Many thanks again.

no i have not noticed that much difference to be honest. From looking at images on the screen to me it looks close. The examples that i've posted aren't the best example of this - except for the girl holding the poster, as i'm very close to her - as i'm quite far from the main subjects.

Looking at some other pics I took over the weekend, the images look pretty similar in terms of DoF to what i'd expect to get from a full frame with 35mm. You really have to compare identical images at varying apertures....and i'm not going to look into that one - i'll leave it for someone else to do

I'm guessing not, but I thought I'd ask since this is my main drive towards eventually getting a full frame camera.

my main drive for a full frame was largely the very high IQ & cropping ability of the 5d2 and using the true width of the EF lenses. Enjoy.

Awesome set! Were these all AutoFocus or did you use manual and guestimate the distances?

Re: x100 samples and thoughts from a 5d2 user

Great set of images and your skill level clearly shows.

One of the reasons I got my X100 was to save the pain of lugging a full frame and bag of lenses around and like you, I am delighted with the IQ and the camera as a whole.

You will find many posts from people complaining about AF, MF and on......many are non owners/users as surely people would consider these factors before buying? Me, I don't have an issue with AF and find it fast enough for street and landscape and in MF I use AF/AE button to good effect - problem solved.

The quality of JPEG out of camera is probably some of the best I have seen and I have always been a Raw only user but the X100 is slowly changing my mind.

Like you, I also find the retro look appealing as it reminds me of the Leica's I have owned and parted with.

Currently shooting landscapes and using SFX Pro2 for conversions - great combo.

Lots more of my X100 images below on my blogsite.

these were all auto. i havn't played with manual yet...i use AF on the 5d2 the vast majority of the time also so no real change there.

Agree with you. So far i've found the AF to be fast enough when you would expect it to be so - in good light. And slower in lower light - no surprise there. I really havn't found complaint with the AF so far. People just need to remember that this isn't a DSLR....so don't expect it to behave like one. No MF for me yet.

Again agreed on the JPG comment. I havn't even put it into RAW mode...as I mentioned above. And I do shoot RAW all the time on the 5d2.

those landscapes are spectacular.

Cheers for the comments.

I did some portrait work on the weekend at 2.8 and am even more impressed with it now.
