The rare Soligor 1:2 135mm C/D (M42) - lots of pics
3

In my search for a A*135/1.8, I stumbled over an almost even rare Soligor 1:2 135mm (C/D) M42 lens

It arrived this morning!

First some shots off the lens itself, then some quick impressions.

My first impression is that it's sharper than I expected. Rendering and contrast is a bit flat (probably because of the lack of coating). All shots wide open without postprocessing.

Is it sharp enough?

Even through double glazing

Interesting bokeh (no noise reduction)

Some 'vintage' rendering and contrast (100% sensor crop)

Nice find!

I have a Soligor C/D 80-200mm/3.5 and it's a very good lens also!

Nice shots.

Nice! Never heard of that one, I recently acquired the big brother to that, the Soligor 200mm f2.8 C/D. Havent played with it much, feels nice in the hand though.

Judging by the hair/eyelashes, acuity seems very good wide-open, bokeh seems nice as well. Color/contrast does seem flat though, which is usually a function of coatings as you say. Maybe punch it up a little bit in post and you have a very nice tool there

Makes me want to pull out my small collection of m42's. I have always avoided non-pentax lens of that era. But as many pentax lens were actually made by these smaller lens makers I will reconsider. I rather like the softer/flatter rendering your lens delivers; don't punch it up too much

Thanks for posting these. That lens almost makes the K5 resemble my Spotmatic

Thx Lloyd, I didn't know the 200/2.8 Following your post, I 've looked for some more info and sample pics but could find a lot, but what I found looked quite promising. Do you feel like posting some of your results with the 200/2.8?

What's keeping you

It's a serious understatement, but I also prefer genuine Pentax material. But since the A*135/1.8 is so rare (or ridiculously priced), I have to settle with this one

By the way, this Soligor 135/2 wasn't cheap at all, I'm affraid. I've paided €250 for it. (But I've spotted it on eBay for +- €500, I didn't hesitate for a second :))

Thanks for posting these. That lens almost makes the K5 resemble my Spotmatic

Thas't my plan for next week

First I'll have to dig up some 35mm film out off my refrigerator, but I can't wait to focus with this lens an a REAL viewfinder

Re: The rare Soligor 1:2 135mm C/D (M42) - lots of pics

Just make sure you read that as Pentax mount lenses because Pentax did all their own lenses until well into the AF lens era. Plenty of people made lenses for the Pentax/Praktica m42 mount. While not many zooms were very good in the days of no ED glass there were still a few gems out there to be found. Especially in Europe and a few makers in Japan. In those days few respected lenses makers even attempted zoom lenses.

I don't need one, but I had a look.

I see an m42 F2 sold a couple of days ago, but none current.

I scored two of them, years apart!

First one was 4 years ago, badged "Apollo TV Lens", in m42 mount, that I dumbly sold to buy a Tamron 70-200/2.8! I instantly had regrets letting go this heavyweight...

Then last week I stumbled on a mint "Porst", in PK mount, for 175€!

These are beasts, and they put the Samyang 85/1.4 to shame...

Re: The rare Soligor 1:2 135mm C/D (M42) - lots of pics

Wow! Great images. Nice lens.

About four or five years ago I came across two M42 "Cult Classics", Vivitar Series 1 135mm f2.3 and Vivitar Series 1 200mm f3 lenses. These are very heavy (built like tanks) lenses. Both of them are sharp wide open. Recently I bought a Pentax-A*135mm f1.8 lens. I havn't used any of these very much yet because they are so hard to focus. Now that I have bought myself a Sony NEX-5N (focus peaking), I have tested them and focusing is real easy now. I hope that the next Pentax top of the line (K-3?) will have focus peaking.

Keep up the great work.

Cheers.

Ron
