And it's the first gigapixel camera. Does self-composing photos, with optimum DoF and a "SMILE!" voice in 73 languages, triggered as your finger hits the button.

If they follow the Apple way then

If Nikon follow the Apple approach the camera will only take pictures that Steve Jobs would have liked, it will sort them in directories that Apple thinks you need, will only work with Aperture and iCloud, and when something goes wrong, you'll need a genius to help you. Nikon's service probably isn't up to "genius" yet.

Re: D800 Apps and the touch screen

It may seem funny, but I would very much like my slr to have live-blogging possibilities.

Being connected and having the possibility to manipulate the image in-camera using (preferably third-party) apps, even for so-called lo-fi output, would be great. Now it's possible to do cropping, raw-to-jpeg conversion, colour manipulation etc. in-camera, so why not put this expeed horsepower to even more good use?

Right now I'm always walking around with my camera in a bag, but when I see something I want to share on the web I need either to use extra equipment or... to restrain to my phone camera, the latter being my favourite choice. Such a waste.

From the hardware side it seems trivial (adding a touch screen and some kind of radio, wifi or bt, for tethering with your smartphone to use 3g, or, in case of a wi-fi, directly internet), much more effort would have to go to software side of such idea.

I believe this is coming (see more and more wi-fi enabled compacts, including Samsung from today's news), but I'm afraid it won't be Nikon (nor Canon) doing it. I don't see these companies as innovators on the software front. It even shows by the new Nikon 1 system. It seems great on the hardware front (speed, quality given sensor size), but not innovating on the strict software side. They may loose to companies offering worse (possible to achieve) final image quality, but better in software and features.

Analogies from other consumer electronics are numerous - superior in quality and affordable looses with "cheaper with features", or, in case of Apple, "expensive but providing great synergy of hardware and software".

Don't mean to start any wars here, just making a point, I realize that this is highly controversial and my opinion is probably biased.

That's what I've meant by "more and more wi-fi enabled compacts, including Samsung from today's news". Cheers!
