BBC slideshow shot entirely on the Ricoh GRDIII

Thought some of you might like to see a report I shot entirely on the Ricoh GRDIII from a prison in eastern Rwanda for the BBC.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-16203507

The pocketsize of the GRDIII helps in so many situations. I suspect a long lens DSLR would have grabbed the prisoner's attention too much, gotten in the way and made me look even more foreign in the eyes of the prisoners and guards.

Inspiring documentary images. Good to see the Ricoh used for this kind of work.

Thanks for your feedback - have long enjoyed your Korean divers images on flickr. I recommended your work to my editor at the BBC the other week. I believe he passed the suggestion on to the Asia desk - a possible Haenyo slideshow story. I hope they get in touch.

Agreed, good work but a rather unexpected subject.

It's strange though what preconceptions one has, the word "Prison" in the description triggered the "monochrome" button in my brain and I expected a black and white series of exposures similar in style to Mitch Alland's Bangkok essay, so I was somewhat surprised by the colour.

I did not actually think the BBC used slide presentations, I really must pay more attention.

Amazing! You will make me buy a GRD now!

Can I ask, how did you manage to get some great colour and detail? Did you do a lot of post-processing?

Thanks, D

Interesting short documentary - I liked the style of the photos being accompanied with just right amount of text.

Bravo!

Hats off to you, sir! Great photography in difficult settings, and I fully agree that the GRDIII was a much better tool in such settings, compared to a DSLR.

Re: BBC slideshow shot entirely on the Ricoh GRDIII

Thanks Daedalus2000

I'm really not that technically knowledgeable about post-prcoessing. However, I used Apple's Aperture software - which is pretty cheap - to adjust the contrast and exposure mostly.

I do sometimes use the "Toy camera" setting on Aperture to make an initial "over adjustment" and then tone down from there.

But, I'll be perfectly honest, I don't really know what I'm doing with the software. I should spend some time trying to understand it.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply which I guess verifies what great camera the GRDIII is.

One last question. What ISO did you use? I am asking because I do not see a lot of noise and whatever is there is very pleasant.

Thanks, D

All ISO64, apart from the one of the guy lighting the fire which was ISO130. I generally leave the GRDIII on automatic for all of those settings as I'm not confident in my own knowledge to set them myself.

Kigaliwire,

just curious, how many pics did you sent to the BBC for this series?

Re: BBC slideshow shot entirely on the Ricoh GRDIII

Thanks BG_CX3_DPREVIEW - I just sent the nine you see. I'd already published a couple of other pics on my blog, from a previous visit to the prison. Reuters get first pick when I do a story like this and I sent them (I think) 6 to accompany the story I put together for them:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/11/21/us-rwanda-biogas-idUSTRE7AK0IN20111121

For the BBC, I'd already edited them down to those 9 you can see to tell the story as I saw it. I have another 4-500 or more from the two visits to the prison, which I have not published.

Thanks! Much appreciate your recommendation. I didn't think anyone really followed the women divers series. Cheers for that.

Great photography and coverage of the story. I really like the format of a photo news story. It tells the story in a few words and let's the reader gain so much more by looking at the photos. Do you use other cameras in your work, or just the Ricoh?

Re: BBC slideshow shot entirely on the Ricoh GRDIII

No ryanshoots, the Ricoh GRDIII is the only camera I have. I'd love to try a Leica M9, but that is way out of my price range. The GRDIII is pretty much ideal for the stuff I do. There are occasions when a long lens would be handy for some stories I'm on - but I'm a text journalist not a snapper, so I don't get too uptight about always "getting the shot".

Great color, and the photos really tell the story well.

I imagine that since it's photojournalism there are restrictions on the changes that you are allowed to make with Aperture?

BTW Helje, I'm noodlepie on Flickr. I let the kigaliwire Flickr account go dormant as I only want one Flickr Pro account. Thanks for making the connection tho.

No athst, just adjustment of contrast and exposure. It's outright photoshopping that is a huge no-no and will, quite rightly, get you the sack...
