Canon EF 100-400mm vs. Sigma 150-500mm??? Please help!!

Currently, I own Canon 7D with;

  • Canon 18-55mm IS

  • Canon EF 70-200 F4L IS

  • Canon Extender 1.4 II

I am thinking of getting another Tele lens for wildlife which is;

  • Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM ~ 1450USD

  • Sigma APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM ~ 950USD

Taking into account that I am owning the 1.4x II and the price different, image quality, speed... which one should I go for?

Should it be better in terms of zoom range for the Sigma 150-500mm then buy the Sigma Tele Coverter 1.4x?

Super thanks!!

Re: Canon EF 100-400mm vs. Sigma 150-500mm??? Please help!!

I went through this same decision and decided on the Canon 100-400 mm.

I went to the local photo store and tried the Sigma. It was OK, the images were fine, but it was very heavy, at least for me, and I was sure I was going to need a tripod to use it properly. The tripod mounted shots with the Sigma were fine but my hand-held shots were not as clear.

I tried the Canon and found it lighter (although still heavy) and easier to handle and, of course, I thought the images were sharper and clearer. I use it all the time for birding and zoos and I almost always use it hand-held.

It is not that I will not buy third party lenses. I have the Sigma 10-20mm and 17-70 F2.8-4 lenses and am happy with both (especially the 10-20) and have been thinking about buying the Sigma 17-50 F2.8 for a trip to Italy. But I think the Canon 100-400 is the better choice.

As always your mileage may vary ...

Re: Canon EF 100-400mm vs. Sigma 150-500mm??? Please help!!

I'm in the same place you are. After checking all the Lens Trst sites I decided on the Canon 100-400 IS. I just sold a Sigma 50-500 Olympus mount and thought about the 150-500 for my 60D but it's almost as big as the 50-500 and the IQ from 400-500mm falls off quite a bit.

I've decided on the 100-400 for the better IQ, better speed and smaller size. I figure I can crop the sharper image of the Canon to make up the difference.

no point for Canon EF 100-400mm

you have the 70-200 and a 1.4 extender, so the 100-400 will just double that range. Why not get a 400 5.6 or if you can afford a 500?

Personally I dont like the long sigma zooms as the image quality seems to lack ...

For what my opinion is worth as a Sigma DSLR and Canon DSLR user who really likes Sigma lenses - get the Canon.

Not really fond of Sigma , I have the Sigma 135 - 400 , 180 MACRO . While they are OK , they will be replaced with canon when they upgrade the 100-400 and the 180 macro [ maybe ]

But right now I have the 70-200 with the 2X III and it is close enough to the 100-400 for me .

Its a bit mickey mouse but I put a review of the 100-400 on youtube.

I can't speak for the Sigma Lense - but the 100-400 is probably my favorite lense.

since your leaning towards the canon, see how much difference there is between the new sigma 50-500OS. The glass in the new sigma is very good. good luck

Certainly would nit get the Sigma 150-500 . I have the 100-400 and it is vg - but worth having a look at the Sigma 50-500 os if you can go somewhere to compare the two .

Re: no point for Canon EF 100-400mm

FWIW:

I tried this solution before I bought the 100-400 and found I was not happy with the fixed focal length. Not the lens itself, which was great, but the fact that I was locked into the 400mm length. I found cases where I was just too close for 400mm and I either could not back up at all or I could back up, but lost the shot while doing it.

For me I appreciated the flexibility of the zoom. But, of course, this is an old argument and that is why there are both fixed and zoom lenses.

Used Canon 100-400L

There are a couple here....

I like my 100-400L. I've only read about the Sigma so I won't comment.

I also study this choose for month and final decided to get the canon 100-400L and have been very happy with it. I have to admit this lens has a bit of a learning curve to getting great results, but well worth the effort.

Keep in mind this lens is being updated and the new version is priced at $2800 which is almost double the cost of the current version . In my opinion no what can the new lens be good enough to make me want to upgrade.

I believe you are mistaken on a new version 100-400 coming out. It has long been rumored but NOT by Canon, and they have never not announced a newer version of that lens.

Careful... only a rumor

This is strictly a rumor on the Canon Rumors site and has not been confirmed by anyone at Canon. That includes both the potential introduction of a new version of the 100-400 and the alleged price point.

If it turns out to be true, I'd also be very sad about the price point, which is way above what I'd be willing to pay, even for a significantly improved version of that lens. I continue to be very happy with the current version (but there is most definitely room for improvement, particularly in the time it takes to acquire focus).

Re: "NEW"...Canon EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS “Soonish”

......dated 11-13-11---> from Canon Rumors.....

I was told today that a new EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS will be making its debut “soonish”. It will be after the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x is officially announced.

It could be tested at Euro 2012 before being announced.

Features
■Ring zoom (not push/pull)
■Latest IS System
■82mm Filter Size
■Weather Sealed
■Slightly heavier than the current model
■Slightly faster f/4 at 100mm (Current is f/4.5)
■Retail around $2800 USD

Re: Canon EF 100-400mm vs. Sigma 150-500mm??? Please help!!

Frankly after testing many of them out, and after so much time behind a camera that I find I don't use IS that much I opted for the newly discontinued Sigma 100-300/4 instead. At 100-200-300 it is generally sharper even wide open than the Canon 100-400, except at 200 where you have to drop it to F5.6. At 300mm it is useable right at F4 while the Canon has to be close to F8 to equal it although the Canon works Ok at F5.6. I found when I added the Canon 1.4x II that the Sigma was almost as good as the Canon at 400mm. I have 2 300/2.8s in my collection and neither one beats the Sigma at 300mm by very much at all. The only reason I think they stopped making it was so it would not be compared to the Sigma 120-300/2.8. Too bad they never offered it with OS although it would have driven the cost up at least 50%.
