Re: just received mine.... yes !!!!

I am going to adapt it to 5n now.

I suposse manufacturer will use same housing for 5n housing because with a couple plastic pieces that cost nothing it can work with both. But it can take some time to go to market.

Molds are quite expensive for this housings just to move 2 buttons 4 milimeters to right if you can solve it with almost the same pieces you should use anyway. Not a exact design but quite functional.

Re: just received mine.... yes !!!!

Would there be any issue making an adapter for any of the wet lenses for widangle for this setup with the 16mm sony lens?

A bracket fixed in the tripod mount should work, but the question is wheter any of the wet lenses have large enough iris for the APS-C NEX5?

If this works it would be a killer UW "compact"!

Cheers

MAking an adapter is easy if you have the knowledge and tools, i am going to use my INON wet lens with it.

do u have any idea the housing for kits lens?
how do the zooming working on the kits housing?

Re: just received mine.... yes !!!!

The kit lens housing should have no zoom capability.

It is a lot more complex design to have zoom capability because 18-55 have a lot of lentgh from 18 to 55mm (adds difficulty to flat port diameter) and you need zoom gear which is not present in the housing.

They just change a little the length of tube for lens to accomodate the standard zoom in 18mm position from the 16mm desing housing.

Respecting to photographs taken with that combo, it is just a glass between water and lens, like docens of other housings. With no flare problems and correct technique, using strobes you should surpass any pl1 pl2 ep3 gx1 gf1 gf2 photo taken with quality equivalent lenses. I believe it is more important here the theory here than the particular photo somebody would do. This camera/housing is capable of good photographs if used correctly.

Re: just received mine.... yes !!!!

just to confirm...what NEX models are compatible with this underwater housing? are there underwater housing for each model? are they all at least-semi compatible?

NEX-3: a separate housing for it?
NEX-5: dedicated housing
NEX-C3: no clue
NEX-5n: compatible w/ NEX-5's but no movie or play button to use

Hello.

No, in the little booklet that comes with the housing listed what appeared as other models of housings available. it said something along the lines of Nex 5 short and Nex 5 long, Nex C3 short and Nex C3 long.

here is a video I found in Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpZl1XczR0U

here is the housing for the Nex C3

cheap NEX-3 underwater camera found

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/499602643/underwater_camera_Waterproof_case_for_camera.html

only thing is that it's minimum of 30pieces per order! I have the 5N & 3 now...would rather get an underwater case since the 5N can't use play/video buttons with the NEX-5 housing, and if anything breaks at least NEX-3 is cheap.

Re: cheap NEX-3 underwater camera found

I have adapted the nex5 housing to be used with my nex5n.

I have done new plastic pieces that reposition button touch in the camera a few milimeters right and back if you see the camera from the back. It was a little tricky to find position to drill these plastic pieces to locate the pin that touch the buttons.

Now video record button WORKS !!! & (playback too)

It is more easy or more difficult depending on the personal skills and tools avalaible.
It can be done with a saw and a file, but it is easier with a milling machine.

The steps i have done are :

1.- Dismantle record and playback button. Special care should be taken to do not damage the very small retairners that lock everything in its place. And to not lose them. Very difficult to replace. Both pins are different so mark them to not interchange them. Housing is quite well designed using CAD.

2.- Measure the pieces and manufacture identical pieces in size but with space provided to the new position of buttons. You can work with 0.1 or 0.2 mm tolerances. The displacement is so minimal that everything works.

There are other ways to do it. you can reuse the original pieces and add a extension. That is "easier" but i opted to do new pieces once i think about all steps of process. I prefered that approach.

The photos tell everything, they are not correctly numbered, but cover all process.

Re: cheap NEX-3 underwater camera found

Playback button can be sustituted by the wheel and other buttons.

So the easiest would be to use some kind of cooper cable of correct diameter to do a "S" that enter in the hole of the original record button green piece and finish where is now the button located in the nex 5N. You can iterate approximation and finish with a functional solution with a minimum of tools and time.

Re: cheap NEX-3 underwater camera found

I have submerged the housing to 4 meter in the sea, with no camera inside and from a dock for 20 minutes. Everything ok.
If sea is ok i will try to start recording next weekends.
