Samsung WB750 new purchase

I have been looking for this camera since I first saw the announcement in September 2011. I looked on Samsung's web site, Amazon.com, Digital Camera Resource web site, dpreview, and elsewhere. It finally popped up on Samsung's web site. There is a "SHOP" button, and when I clicked on it, it lead to a no results page. I kept checking throughout November, and then on November 22, the SHOP button press lead to "1 Online Retailer" and a link to Frys.

The Frys WB750 page showed the camera was available in limited quantities, 1 per household, for $279.99, and when I clicked the "Add to Cart" button, it came up in the cart at $209. I couldn't believe it. This was a brand new high-tech model being discounted $70; some early price estimates had it priced over $300. Then it occurred to me that the price reduction was probably a "Black Friday" deal. I was still doubtful, so I canceled the purchase and resolved to call Frys the next morning, early. When I called Frys, the lady said that the deal was just as represented and that there were two cameras still available, so I got back on the Frys web site and ordered it immediately. The price with shipping was $220.94. UPS delivered the camera on 11/30/11.

While waiting for the camera to arrive, I kept checking the Samsung and Frys web sites. Samsung went back to no results, and Frys went to 'None available for shipping', only store pickup available. Just before writing this report, Samsung and Frys began showing the camera available again - for $279.99, no discount. I've not found the WB750 anywhere else.

I printed the 145 page User Manual, so I could study and set up the camera without having to be on the computer with the pdf file. I installed the battery and connected the battery charger before trying to take any pictures (as the Quick Start booklet suggests). I registered the camera via the Samsung web site; I read that this will extend the warranty three months but have not received any confirmation from Samsung yet.

A 1-page insert in the camera package showed accessories, and I decided I wanted an HDMI cable, an extra battery, and a battery charger (the charger that comes in the box charges the battery while it's in the camera). Although there is an "ACCESSORIES" button on the Samsung WB750 web page, there are none shown when you click the button. After Googling for 'Samsung accessories', I found a citation that said to order accessories through a repair center. I had encountered this with Sony camcorders years ago so was not surprised. I located two places to order accessories from:
SamsungParts.com and SamsungAccessory.com

Neither of these are actual Samsung owned but are authorized Samsung dealers. I ended up ordering the battery and charger from one dealer and the HDMI cable from the other; neither dealer had all the accessories I wanted.

I've only had this camera three days and just took pictures yesterday, so I'm still learning the operation and features. I made an album and put just two pictures in it for now, but I plan to add more, in different exposure situations. I'm not an expert photographer, I just use cameras to record what I see and find interesting. I'll try to learn the camera features and provide info and pictures as I have time.

The pictures that I took look very good to my untrained eye. They are certainly as good as pictures taken by my Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ7. I plan to mount both cameras (WB750 and SZ7) on a tripod 2-camera mount and take side-by-side pictures and post them in my album, which by the way, is here:
http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/826709088/albums
with only 2 pictures in it now.

One last thing: in the WB750 entry in the dpreview database, there is a user review. You can find it here:
http://www.dpreview.com/products/samsung/compacts/samsung_wb750/user-reviews

Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ7 Samsung WB750

Thanks for your info and photos, although landscape/2MB resolution not allowing to check image quality. Also exif info in photos lacks of original resolution and firmware verison, can you put it?

btw i've posted a link to a full review of the cam yesterday if you are interestd in:

Enjoy the camera. It is amazing the zoom power they get inow nto these tiny machines. The pictures look fine and for the price it is a bargain.

Re: Samsung WB750 new purchase

Thanks for the details and the sample shots. Were those hand held or on a tripod?

Giiven the huge amount of zoom in the second shot, the sharpness is better than I expected. The colors look realistic. Nice sky in the first shot.

It is a worry that you consider it slow in response time compared to the Sony HX5V when dpr criticised the Sony for being unresponsive.

One question, if you don't mind. I read somewhere that the dimensions in the specifications are slightly misleading because the quoted thickness does not include the protrusion of the lens surround. Will it fit in a shirt pocket? (that's my criterion for portability).

although landscape/2MB resolution not allowing to check image quality.

I'm new to this web site/forums/albums so I imported the pictures to my album using default settings. I'll look for options next time around. But here's what I know about sizes:

OnMyMac 4096 x 3072 = 12.6MB 72ppi
Album-sm 480 x 360 = .17MB 96ppi
Album-md 900 x 675 = .61MB 96ppi
Album-lg 1600 x 1200 = 1.92MB 96ppi

You probably know that you can click on the pictures to make them larger, twice.
I uploaded the 12.6MB picture to the album; looks like it got downsized.
I downloaded each size picture back to my Mac to get the sizes shown above.

I don't see a 2MB number, but perhaps you are referring to the largest size at 1.92MB. I'd be delighted to know how to get full 12MB pictures into the album.

Also exif info in photos lacks of original resolution and firmware verison, can you put it?

X resolution 72.0 ppi (pixel per inch)
Y resolution 72.0 ppi (pixel per inch)
Software 110163

I couldn't find anything else even close in the EXIF info.

Were those hand held or on a tripod?

Hand held.

I never said anything about response time; maybe it was in the review.

I read somewhere that the dimensions in the specifications are slightly misleading because the quoted thickness does not include the protrusion of the lens surround. Will it fit in a shirt pocket? (that's my criterion for portability).

Here are the numbers (all in mm):

H
Samsung 59.4
My caliper 59.1

W
Samsung 105.3
My caliper 105.3

D
Samsung 24.9 !!
My caliper 33.6

I measured the body (and lens surround) but not the protrusions (buttons etc).
It won't fit in my shirt pocket; I use a camera case.
YMMV

Sorry, I wrongly assumed that the "user review" was yours.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I am still waiting then for something truly pocketable.

When you upload photos into your gallery, DPReview creates a Small, Medium and Large version if the uploaded photo is large enough. As you've seen, your Large versions are only 1.92mp, taking up approximately 1/2MB of space for the photo files. The originally uploaded file can't be seen until you edit your profile settings under the Privacy and safety tab, where you'd check the Allow button under "Allow download of originals". Right now you must have Don't allow checked, which I believe is the default setting. After the original uploads can be downloaded, you might find that they contain all of the original EXIF data.

Re: Samsung WB750 new purchase

Does the digital zoom work in video mode?

There were two samples of this camera on YouTube.......... It looks like one of them had a major issue with focus tracking during zoom, the other had only a minor one in that same area.......... How well does the focus track during zoom with your unit?

I edited my profile settings and checked the Allow button under "Allow download of originals" and now you can see the original pictures in my album. I downloaded the original picture to my Mac and the original EXIF info is intact. Kewl.

I'll add a few more pictures today and later I'll try to get a video clip or two into the album.

Thanks for the help.
