New Rumor : D900 + D800 coming soon

Rumors are coming from official french magazine "chasseur d'images". They are well known and quite serious, each time they wrote about upcoming gear, it revealed to be true.

D900 :

certainly 36mp,
no AA filter
60fps in 1080P, 120 fps in 720P.
No Flash.

price around 4000$ or more.

D800 :

18MP
30fps in 1080P, 60fps 720P (this, I hope not, why not full HD ?)
price around 2500-2800$

Lets wait & see

Nikon D800 Nikon D90

I'd buy the 18mp D800 and then later date the 36mp D900 - certainly going to be exciting and expensive year in 2012.

But...but...

I was planning to start speculating about the D900 the minute the D800 was announced. Now what am I to do? Daydreaming about the D1000? No way

BTW, what's an 'official french magazine' :-?

Since France maintains a bureau dedicated to preserving the french language, any magazine published in official french can be deemed official.

me too, just wish they wont cripple the 18MP camera processor to only 720P in 60FPS, this sounds so old-fashion

Sacré bleu! This sounds almost too good...

Two models at the same time? Mon dieu, c'est incroyable!!

I doubt the truthfulness of that particular claim, but I certainly hope they're right... this time.

D900 :

D800 :

That is sound business logic, to my uneducated eyes, even though the prospect of two announcements in the proximity of an inevitable D4 announcement seems a tad extreme.

Anyhow, the gap between top-of-the-line DX body and a 4000$ FX one seemed, uh, gaping. This would be the perfect remedy. I'll take my hat off to Nikon and kindly pay for one of those bodies if this scheme realises.

no, the D40 is everything anyone needs no need to upgrade for the next 50 years ! Actually, a camera with upgraded D40 sensor + video would be awesome, no line down-sampling and good fat pixels !

May be it is...

Instead of a 36MP "D900" we will see a 36MP D4x $6000+

D800 will be 18MP @ $3000+

I've often thought the same thing. The 12 MP to 36 MP is a big jump for the D700 to D800. The D3x at 24 MP to maybe a D4x with 36 MP not so much.

I don't want to do the math, but maybe a D7000 16MP sensor to a full frame D800 at maybe 24 MP? Noise always improves with each iteration of processor and sensor too as Nikon improves on their photo-lithography and stepper processes they probably provide to Sony to make them. I think 18 MP is going to bit too low as the cell phone cameras like the Nokia N8 are already at 12 MP with pretty good video and I would think 16 MP will be their next cell camera jump. With the outfit making an adapter to use Canon and Nikon pro lenses on the iPhone, who knows where it will lead? Maybe a 100MP mirror-less or DSLR FF beast in another 3 years? I would hope the new Nikon pro series would be ahead of whatever the market is going to throw out to the general consumer base in the next few years.

I dunno if Nikon would go that low to $6K though from their already $8K D3x though. If anything, I'd expect it to rise a bit if they hit the 36 MP mark until the market call for it flattens. A D800 at 24 MP maybe $2,999.95? I think over $3K will run a lot off (maybe). The D4x, if it is to be 36 MP, maybe $8,499.95? I'd hate to think they would want to go as extreme as Leica's S2 ridiculous pricing as they close in on the S2's MP range.

Time will tell when Nikon finally addresses their new pro cameras...some day...maybe. That 36 MP number sure has a lot of the Canon guys in my local photo store wondering though about what Canon will counter with, but it is fun to watch and listen to the banter.

Megapixels and PPI calculations. And some worries...

FTH wrote:

D900 :

D800 :
18MP

I once calculated the PPI figures for both of these MP numbers in another thread, and I'll just quote myself:

""I agree that Nikon shouldn't simply merge the D700 and D3X into a D800. I do wish - and like you said, it would make sense - they'd bring a new camera class below the D800. [edit: if Cd'I is correct, this proved to be true, albeit with a different naming scheme]

And if it were to have an 18MP sensor, I would gladly accept, since it would give me A3+ prints (i.e. 13x19") at roughly 270 ppi. Perfect, all things considered. Of course, 24MP would give around 320 ppi, which would be even better, while 36MP would give around 390 ppi in an A3+ print and about 320 ppi in an A2 (i.e. 16,5x23,5") print.""

But who is supplying the 18MP sensor? Will it be of the same design as the D3S sensor, i.e. high read noise suppressing the dynamic range at low ISOs? And lower colour separation due to less selective CFA? That sounds to me like a wet dream for a PJ, but a make-do landscape camera for those on budget...

Very interesting that there may be two new FX bodies around the D700 area.

AA Filter?
Anti Aliasing filter to smoother edges?

What bodies have said filter now?

Could you send us a link or something that they wrote, because as a french speaker I can't find anything on the site of chasseur d'images or on their forum.

Or, we could start a new thread on it

Anyway. These seem really unconvincing. The rumours at NR on the 36MP camera are now hard enough it's more or less a given.

There has never been any real evidence that there is an 18MP sensor coming. The only suggestion is that Nikon tested an 18MP sensor for the D3, but that would be over 4 years old now and highly unlikely to be used in any up to date camera. My own supposition has always been 24 or 25MP in the D4, especially now that the competition has gone 18MP - Nikon has the technology to do better so why would it not?

And again Nikon has never released two generations at once, so it's very unlikely they'd use such a naming scheme. There could be a D800h and a D800x, the same camera with different resolution sensors.

If they do though, it his highly unlikely that the lower res high speed version would be released any time close to the D4, since it would simply cannibalize it. If any thing like this was going to happen you'd get the 36MP D800 and 24MP D4 released about the same time, with the 24MP D800H being released a year or so later, once the initial sales rush for the D4 had subsided.
So, I don't believe these rumours at all, I'm afraid.
