SX30 is filter adaptor - needed or not?

I'm new around here, and mostly interested in discussing my Nikon D3100, but I have a question regarding my girlfriend's SX30 is superzoom. So hi.

She has had two 52mm Kenko UV filters break whilst on the camera, when it was in its bag, in her rucksack, whilst riding her motor scooter. The lens cap stayed on both times. She hasn't (consciously) mistreated it, but obviously something isn't right.

The salesman in the shop sold her the filter as a lens protector, and I think that's sensible, but obviously something isn't right.

Without getting into the discussion of the probable poor optics of this cheap filter, why might they be breaking so easily? I'm leaning towards one of:

1) Crappy filter.

2) Not using a filter adaptor for this camera. I read that it should not have filters screwed in directly, but then some people have reported success from what I have read.
3) Crappy bag (don't remember who the manufacturer is).

All advice appreciated, we are a bit confused.

The whole point of the lens protectors is to have them break, instead of the camera lens. Sounds like they're performing that function well.

How does she carry the bag on the scooter? If it's flopping around, no wonder they broke.

I don't understand how she screwed them in without a lens adaptor so maybe part of the problem is she's putting them on wrong. Second, as others have said, it would seem, with two glass filters breaking (1) the problem isn't the glass filter, its the way the camera is moving around on the scooter and (2) as mentioned above--they worked. They protected the lens from breaking instead.

Anyway, it seems very likely that the problem isn't the filters at all.

The SX30 does not have filter threads. so forcing a filter into the parallel grooves will likely put stress on the filter frame and therefore the glass. The Lensmate adapters are cheap enough and work very well.

Lensmate.com filter adapter is much smaller 58mm than canon's 67mm. This allows for less weight and no vinyetting or focus light interference.

Re: SX30 is filter adaptor - needed or not?

When the SX series first came out discussions / questions about just jamming a filter directly onto the front were pretty common, because the design lent itself to forcing and it seemed to work. But once the adapters came out that discussion ended. A competent salesman wouldn't have sold a filter without an adapter.

Remember too, that in addition to a UV "protection" filter the adapter will work with truly useful filters, especially a polarizer, which is great for getting blue sky and dealing with glare and reflection on water surfaces, a must-have for many outdoors shots.
