High quality 3D videos and photos with Sony NEX

TomClive tested 3D photo and 3D video with his NEX camera using an image splitter attached to the NEX lens... see this thread http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1050&message=39040134

Even if there are 3D camcorders currently available, I think that it will be in Sony's interest to add high quality 3D video (and 3D photo) to the NEX system as it would be a product differentiator and it would bring more people to their 3D ecosystem, such as 3D Blu-ray readers, 3D HDTVs, 3D PCs (for editing), 3D media centers, etc. The same could be said for the other large electronic manufacturers like Panasonic and Samsung and their mirrorless systems.

I think that Sony will add to the NEX lens set an image splitter (two channel adapter) and a new zoom lens on which the adapter will fit without crippling the zoom. Together they would deliver streamlined high quality and convincing 3D videos (and 3D photos) when used on NEX cameras equipped with a powerful enough image processor to process video files compliant with the new AVCHD revision 2.0 format for Stereoscopic 3D. The files would be supported by editing softwares (updated to handle the new AVCHD rev 2.0 3D formats) and played on (new or firmware updated) compliant Bluray players and HDTVs...

What's your take!

Panasonic's 3D Lumix G 12.5mm / F12

Whhhhhyyy not use a 3D lens for photo and/or video?

I do not have hands-on experience with that lens. Reading from Panasonic's own site and other sites:

  • fixed F12 (no zoom)

  • splits up the image sensor, assigning certain parts to each lens (less than half the sensor each with the GH2)

  • for 3D photo only when used with Panasonic's GH2, but could be hacked to shot movie (side by side recording; two less-than-SD images), users say video results are not impressive

  • PCMag review on GH2: “Literally every (photo) image shot with this lens was easy to look at and was rendered in impressive 3D”

  • Needs lot of light or a flash and a tripod.

Is that consistent with your hands-on experience with this lens on a NEX 5?

Re: Panasonic's 3D Lumix G 12.5mm / F12

I make 95% of my pictures freehand and with available light - no problem (see above pictures, late at night, freehand)

Lumix3D fits (of course) each m4/3 camera for photo & video (3D is firmware supported by G2, GH2, G3 and others).

With (cheap) adapter also NEX5 etc. ...
