Performance comparison NX10 vs NX11

I ran many tests on this and won't bore you with all the details, just a summary. In brief the NX11 does have a performance advantage over the NX10, mainly in the speed with which it refreshes screen icons, grid lines, histogram and focus square after each shot. As a result shot to shot times are faster in everyday use.

To test, I set the cameras up the way I use them, RAW, Single AF, Selection AF center position, Single drive, (Quick view off for the test). I made a sequence of shots as follows: after each exposure I waited until the screen image and icons, grid lines, histogram and focus frame all refreshed, then half pressed the shutter button, obtained focus confirmation (green square plus double beep) then fully depressed the shutter button. Both cameras used the same San Disk Extreme Class 10 UHS-1 card.

The NX11 made 10 shots in 18 seconds and would keep shooting at that rate indefinitely (until the memory card filled) without the dreaded "Processing" window appearing.

The NX10 made 10 shots in 30 seconds with obviously slower refresh of the screen icons etc
Both cameras run a bit faster in JPG.

I think one shot every 1.8 seconds with re-focus and re-metering on each shot is quite a decent performance and certainly plenty fast enough for general photography.

In Continuous AF with Continuous drive, shutter button held down, both cameras made 10 shots in 16 seconds but this mode is not really much use as you get to see a blank monitor for about three quarters of each cycle.

I am a little bit irritated by the lag between shooting in RAW and reviewing the picture. Has this been improved in NX11?

Not quite sure I understand your problem. On both the NX10 and 11 Quickview (as Samsung calls it) comes up a small fraction of a second after the last shutter sound. Basically as my finger lifts off the shutter button after making an exposure. That seems pretty quick to me.

When I shoot in RAW, I can see a preview of the picture immediately after the shot and that's OK, however if I would like to zoom the picture and check for focus, etc. I have to go to the Preview Mode and that's where there is a message "Processing..." and I have to wait 4-5 seconds. That gets even worse if I have shot many frames in a sequence and then try to switch to Preview Mode and see all those pictures. It takes few second to save each pictures from the buffer to the memory and the "Processing..." may stay there for half a minute before I can see the pictures.

Re: Performance comparison NX10 vs NX11

Use a Class 10 card from a high reputation maker. I use Sandisk. Not all Class 10 cards run at the same speed, some are 50% faster than others. The card is the main rate limiting factor in the speed at which the camera clears the buffer and writes images to the card. When I upgraded from a Class 6 to a Class 10 card, write time after a run of several RAW shots fell from about 19 secs to 4 secs. You will still get the dreaded "Processing" sign while the flashing green activity light is on when you try to reset ISO, go into image review etc....

What's the maximum capacity NX10 supports for SD cards? And what's the fastest possible SD card you would recommend?

Re: Performance comparison NX10 vs NX11

NX10 supports SDHC, up to 8GB guaranteed, NX11 supports SDHC up to 32 GB guaranteed. I am currently using SanDisk Extreme SDHC Class 10, UHS-1, 30MB/Sec, 200x, 8GB. These work fine in NX10 and NX11. It appears worthwhile getting top brand cards. They cost more but run faster.

Re: Performance comparison NX10 vs NX11

Thank you for the answer. When I bought my NX10, I also bought the cheapest 8GB card from the store, it's Toshiba and is probably of low class. I thought it was the NX10 which was slow and that was driving me crazy but I'll definitely buy a quality SDHC card and declare NX10 not guilty

Re: Performance comparison NX10 vs NX11

Hi,

I've tried 3 cards. A cheap no name one, an old sandisk, and a new sandisk extreme (20mb/sec). The difference is is very big, so I also recommend to get a fast card, but please don't buy them on eBay (I've got mine from amazon).

Cheers,

Jose

Did you have the newes firmware on the NX10? Is the NX11 worth the money even after the NX10 new firmware?

Is the NX10 panorama mode the same sweep panorama than the NX11 has and as good?

Re: Performance comparison NX10 vs NX11

NX10 FW 1.3 (latest), NX11 FW 1.1. If you have NX10 with FW 1.3 and it is working OK, there is no point in upgrading to NX11 unless the slightly faster shot to shot rate is very important to you. The sweep panorama appears to be the same, just accessed via a dedicated icon on the main mode dial on the NX11. The best thing I got with the upgrade from NX10 to NX11 was the 18-55mm Mk2 lens which is better built and optically superior probably due to better manufacture as I believe it is the same optical formulation. I found the iFunction on the new lens to be a step backwards in operating efficiency. I wish it could be turned off. If you have an NX10 I would suggest waiting for the NX20, meantime enjoy the NX10 it's an excellent camera with some interesting lenses coming soon.

Thanks!

I can find a new NX10 to purchase; $450 Cdn.
A new NX11 is $560 Cdn.

Just thinking...

Just FYI:

Have always ran 16G class 10 in my NX10 with no issues. (Transcend SDHC 16G class-10)

Why would I want to support Amazon. Support a local camera store
