D7000 and Sunpak PZ42X Flash - does it work?
I have just bought a D7000 and am now looking for a flash. Given prices, I am loathe to buy a Nikon Speedlight when a Sunpak PZ42X is 1/3 the price of a SB-700. Is this false economy, or will the Sunpak do a good job and be compatible with the camera?
The PZ42X works on my D80 and D90, and while I don't own the D7000 I don't see a reason why it would not work on that camera model. But the flash is not only less expensive than the SB-700, it also lacks some features such as:
dual AF assist beam
simple optical slave mode
Also, it has much worse ergonomics - settings are done via 2 buttons only whereas the SB-700 has 11 (I think) with lots of customization. And it's a simpler construction with lighter body, plastic foot etc.
But if you just want a simple flash to use in the camera hot shoe, the PZ42X should be OK, it's in a class with Vivitar DF-383, Yongnuo YN-467, and Sigma EF-610 DG ST.
