Wide-angle closeups: AIS 20/3.5 with K-1 and tilt ring, D90

Hi all,
some fresh test shots for your consideration.

Today's menu: Nikkor AIS 20/3.5, that has a reputation for producing nice wide-angle close-ups with low background blur when used with the thin K-1 extension tube (AFAIK earned mostly on FX cameras where it really is wide). Not the best technique imaginable and a bit of breeze to annoy me...

For comparison, 18-200VR @18mm on K-1 (notice min aperture is smaller)

Part two: the tilt adapter. Not a very versatile gadget with a fixed angle an useful for close-ups or macro only. Useful if you want to shoot small flat thing from an angle, for example if you want them in direct sunlight and don't want to be in sun's way. Probably vignettes on FX. Quite some CA here and there.

Interesting lens and fine images. I actually like the ones with the tilt adapter better.

Do you have any images that's shooting into the sun (which thelens is famous for)?

Also, what is the "tilt" adapter?

Not yet, a recent acquisition. Though generally I am interested in sunlight.

May be combined with extension tubes or a reversal ring for more magnification, but not useful for infinity focus.

Thanks very much. The tilt adapter seems also blurred the not-in-focus part.

I'm also interested in the Nikon 20mm f3.5. Let us know if you have more comments on the lens.

Of course. The plane of sharp focus is tilted. On the thin side, the extension is similar to the K-1 ring, but on the thick side it is a lot more. With an extension tube that thick all over you have no inf focus (and some more magnification and some less working distance).

Well it's an old lens so samples and reviews are plenty. It is not particularly sharp as a normal WA lens at infinity, so it is generally not considered best choice for crop cameras where it isn't that wide either, it is more of a dedicated close-up thing. There is a similarly spec'd current MF Voigtlander pancake that is obviously better for general-purpose, though not as stellar as some of its brethren. About twice the price (still not awfully pricey), but has the chip and focuses closer. I couldn't get info whether it is good close up.

I have the 20mm 3.5 Ais which I use on a D700 (previously on film bodies). Never tried it with an extension tube though.

My own experience is that it's actually very good stopped down to F8 if the subject is at a distance. Focused close it's just terrible. Soft at the edges and horrible smeary distortion. I hadn't really used it at short distances until I took it as part of a manual lens kit for mountain walking; ugh.... horrible.

Well KR has one comparison

BR's opinion here:

(some more info on Nikongear, but it has gone pay lately)

He claims excellent sharpness used up close on K-1 (that's around 1:3). Though rather obviously abberations are increased at close-focus; it is possible to increase focus throw at the close end so that max magnification goes from 1:10 to 1:6 with a relatively simple operation, so Nikon obviously did not consider that part of the range perfect.
My samples are stopped down way too much to judge sharpness
