I don't need to take a class matey; I've been printing analogue and digital images for 25 years, professionally. Amongst others, I've collaborated on the writing and production of Photoshop Wow books. My prints have hung in the Natural History Museum, The National Gallery and The Australian Consulate in London. Apart from that, I don't give a flying eff how many awards your pal has. In this industry, awards are ten a penny.

RAW provides the potential for better images than JPG. No ifs, no buts. End of story.

It is no end because there is an if to add, the statement should look like this:

  • RAW provides the potential for better images than JPG, if the user knows well how to post process images and use a good program to do it

Now it is end of the story

And thanks to you for bringing this thread back to us m4/3sers. I either was traveling or whatever and didn't see this first time around. Great stuff Aleo!

And if was on any other forum, I wouldn't have ever seen it as this is the only forum I pay attention to. So thanks also for posting the op on this forum.

There is a second point I would like to clarify. Once that one's intention is clear, one should get a minimal body of photographic techniques, and verify them with the simplest camera available

Those cost nothing, and are nowadays readily available in sites like Cambridge in colour .

To make an example the fastest AF will not replace a knowledge of Zone Focus for Street Shooting. This seems often ignored.

It would be nice if one was able to analyse a master's picture in terms of techniques used. I learned to do it for literary texts, but I am not a specialist in Iconography.

Use of techniques than leads to composition which is the province of Art and then to the use of Symbols.

Criticism is a sort of top down approach, but the artist works bottom up.

Gear and software, methinks, are an intermediate step - expert systems nowadays, which incorporate some of the knowledge, but not all.

Am.

I think you are very correct in this. If you look at a well recognized photographers work, no matter the gear used (past a certain point of quality) doesn't matter so much after they attain that certain level of competence and comprehension. It may take them a while to learn their gear, and learn what they want to achieve in software, or printing...but once they get to that threshold, their style and vision will matter more. They will take interesting photographs whether a Leica or a Holga. I know of one of Europe's highest recognized fashion photographers who has done published magazine shoots with a 3mp digicam, and it looks the same style and creative bent, as does his work with a 1ds MkXX or the Pentax he was using last I saw. The lighting the style and above all the creativity.

I agree that good gear does make it easier for most, but creativity can overcome most obstacles.

Re: Gary Winogrand:addendum

One of my favorites by Winogrand:

You have a lifetime to learn technique. But I can teach you what is more important than technique, how to see; learn that and all you have to do afterwards is press the shutter. - Garry Winogrand

Re: Best Photographers

I always liked what Bresson said in an interview (I think I saw it on public TV or somewhere) When the interviewer asked him why as a painter he became a photographer and he answered "because photography is much faster"....that somehow hit me as really funny.

Re: Thank you, Photo Grapher, for remembering this thread (nt)

I enjoyed the original posting and the links, but I remember reading the sequence of names: Godard, Cartier-Bresson, Capa, Adams, Arbus, ... Giants all.

But then (wait for it): Rockwell.

Rockwell? Ken Rockwell? With the rest of those geniuses?

I don't know about any of the rest of you, but that made me throw up in mouth a little bit.

At least, someone points that one

It was on purpose, it is my Portuguese humor .... Ahah

Glad you noticed

Hope some may post other new good photographers on this thread

Re: No one but you, says that is Off Topic

Here on Micro Four Thirds Forum, no one complains but you , and HERE there are a lot of people that liked the thread

I don't know who is moderator but the thread is among the most bookmarked

If you don't like don't post here, I though you were a more open minded person, but it seems you only like to complain with no reason

There are many that appreciate Photography , and not only talk about gear
