Depends on what/how you shoot. If you do portraits, any card Class 6 or higher will work. If you shoot sports with burst shots, you'll need something fast, like a Class 10 or UHS-1 card. Sandisk is always a safe bet. I've had good luck with Transcend, too.

Try the Nikon approved card list.

If you are doing continuous shooting, you might want a faster (and more expensive) card like the SanDisk Pro Extreme card.

Some might caution you away from Transcend cards. I use plenty of them and have never had an issue but of course, YMMV.

There's no "best" card for any particular camera. Unless you are doing something where the card would limit you (like continuous exposure), any card would probably be fine. The sweet spot on cost seems to be 8-16GB cards right about now. I saw a special on dealnews.com today for some SanDisk Pro cards in 8GB and 16GB.

Re: BEST memory card for Nikon D5100?

I am using a SanDisk Class 10 16g card in my D5100. I have never had a problem with it being slow. Last night at my son-in-law's hockey game I shot almost 300 pictures in 5-15 shot bursts using continuous shooting and it never made me wait for any time before I could shoot him again as he was going the other way on the ice. (By the way, I found out at this hockey game that it's real hard to shoot through the netting around the rink. Real hard) I've shot 2 or 3 minutes of video as well and the camera is ready to shoot another picture immediately. Hope this helps as I am no expert. I just know what I like. Speed is good.

I will rarely be shooting videos and and continuous shooting/ burst shots, and action shots. I will mostly be shooting portraits, landscapes, architecture, macro, plenty night shots, and long exposure shots....

Any card will do, then. Just get the biggest card you can afford.

Amazon Class 10 Transcend. $49 works great. Don't let the card-snobs keep you from getting a card that is not on the "approved" list from Nikon. that list is a CROCK.

I've run some tests ...

I tested card reader speeds on a USB2 card reader which cannot take advantage of the inherent speed advantage of UHS-1 cards, and the UHS-1 card still beat the rest. A Patriot class 6 came in second and an AData class 10 came in third.

http://kimletkeman.blogspot.com/2011/06/lexar-company-with-superb-customer.html

If one were to buy the new USB3 Lexar card reader, one would find the transfer speeds of the UHS-1 cards shooting through the roof ... and of course nothing will be as fast for write speeds inside your D5100 as a UHS-1 class card ...

Unfortunately, Patriot makes great cards but they have inherent incompatibilities with the D7000 and probably the D5100. The so-called "card snobs" are in fact right that you must be cautious ... you would be better to ignore advice from people who like to call others names.

Re: BEST memory card for Nikon D5100?

I bought an 8GB and 16GB Sandisk Extreme for my D7000, and use the 16GB for video. These aren't cheap cards, but I see no reason to go cheap on the card. The difference between a $10 card and $30 card will be forgotten long before you wear out the card.

Dave, you be a copycat!! I think you heard me mention a while back, that I have a Transend 32 gb Class 10 card in my D5100.. When I pull up properties or somewhere, it tells me how many shots I got left, they upward of 3400 left. I have already shot about 400.. All LARGE too...:) I didn't even format this card in my D5100. I just deleted everything that was on it from another camera, and that was it. Approved list! Ha...Now, I am not going with some brand I have never heard of.

Now, I want to copy of you and get one of the big 300+ lens,!!:)

LOL! I bought the Transcend when I got my 3100. I must have gotten mine before yours as the 5100 wasn't out yet. LOL!
