Whats the best MF legacy telephoto for NEX

I currently use a Leica 75mm f2 APO with it which produces great results but is only the equivalent of 112mm long

I need something with more reach and I have to have decent image quality but I'm not looking to spend a fortune, happy with MF but would also consider a great zoon if one exists

So I'm looking at a Nikon 135mm 2.8 E series (which they say is almost as good optically as the nikkor) Used £80 and adaptor £125 (I know there's cheaper but I've had bad experiences with cheapos so sticking with Voigtlander) make a grand total of £205
Its also fairly light

Any other suggestions on great quality manual telephotos?

Zeiss Jena MC 135 f3.5 in m42 mount is one of the better ones out there.

cheers, it looks pretty good, some nice examples of it used on the NEX on flickr, I'll just have to bit the bullet and get a cheapo adaptor:-)

The Canon new FD 80-200 L f4 zoom appears to equal the best at almost any of these focal lengths except for some Leicas according to the Photozone survey,
http://www.photozone.de/active/survey/querylens.jsp
KEH has had a few of these in the mid 200$ range recently.

I like the pentax M 75-150 mm zoom lens. It's sharp and contrasty.

I've got a Zeiss Jena 70-210mm in MD mount. The only thing i notice is that its much warmer then the kit lens: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1042&message=38420885

I can agree that CZJ Sonnar MC 3.5/135 is great lens and it is quite cheap, I still own that one and still shooting with it I may also recommend newer verson of this lens: CZ ZA Sonnar 1.8/135, it is one of the best but it also cost more than 10x of CZJ 3.5/135.

Zoom Lens with 'Jena' in name (like 'Jenazooms', except CZJ Vario-Pancolar 2.7-3.5/35-70 and CZJ Vario-Sonnar 4/80-200) are not Carl Zeiss designed lenses. Those are rebranded version of Early Japanese Cosina zooms, which are descent quality (but not horibble at least).

I may recommend CZ Vario-Sonnar 4-5.6/70-300, but it was made only with Contax N mount. It could be converted to EOS by Conurus, but still need power supply to operate with eg.Nex camera body. Conurus made some info how to connect it electronically as manual lens. Conurus also works on EOS to Sony E-mount full electronic adapter (like LA-EA1 to Sony A mount), they have already build prototype. Other producents also works with that one and they have already done with prototype. So..everything is still possible

Canon 80-200 F4L

Yes it looks like a great performer but at 1Kg in weight it kind of defeats the purpose for me of using an Nex, I think I'll go for the CZJ 135 as its not too heavy and decent IQ but thanks for all the suggestions

The focal length and speed !?

Well, that depend on what one would call Tele. 135mm in film days can only ( marginally ) be called start of Tele range. Its more like LONG FOCAL. On NEX though the 135 now image cover as roughly 200 on film so that now it really did got into the Tele range ( still only starting to be so ). So the Q you must ask is if that coverage is good for you already.

As tele goes, the speed and the focal length go hands in hand. the longer the focal length , the larger the number of f/stop ( slower )it usually goes.

135 on NEX is a good start, and there is loads of good 135mm among old MF lens. Other than subjective evaluation as to image render. There is the usual thing about speed, subject distance ( minimal ) and weight / size / bulk.

While it might not be MF, but Minolta's own Alpha mount AF 135/2.8 is pretty good, you need the Sony adapter of course, but you got back the aperture control ( automatic ).

Yon can give a try to the Voigtlander 75mm Color Heliar.

It's a great lens with a small form factor in LTM mount (needs an adapter on my NEX3).

search the forum for similar threads...

there's been one just few days ago:

People say Vivitar Series 1 is decent.

I'm getting a Tokina RMC with long end of 200mm (giving me actually 300mm).
It's cheap and good enough to play with.

Re: Whats the best MF legacy telephoto for NEX

Hi,

you really know how to use your m9 and 50 summilux. The portrait you have posted on the Leica forum is superb. The 135 3.5 Jena zeiss is very good indeed but you may as well try to find a used Leica m 135mm - Elmarit or Telyt. I have seen the 135/2.8 goggled and Canada made go for very little money. I don't think the goggles will interfere with the nex5 body and I presume they can be removed anyway. If you decide to go for the CZJ, make sure you get the MC version. It also focuses down to one meter, if you think imperial, this is something like three and a half feet. Pretty good. Happy choosing and shooting.

I've suggested that you could try the Voigtlander and when I read your original post one more time I notice that you own a similar focal length made by Leica !

Sorry for the wrong post...

I like the Canon old FD 135 F2.5.

Best? I really doubt it.

Pretty darn good, fast, and inexpensive? Yes.

On the plus side it's sharp, has zero distortion, and features a built-in hood.

On the minus side, it's quite heavy.

Olympus OM 250mm f2

If I found one and had the money I'd be all over an olympus 250mm f2. The other option is the 180mm f2(f1.8??) in contax mount.
