HS20 Velvia shots

After trying out my HS20 with normal colour, I thought I'd see how the Velvia came out.

Luckily, it's been another warm sunny day here, so I had a wander along the river. Apologies for the repetitive nature of my subjects (more Herons, robins!), but there's only so much wildlife you can see in the middle of a city!

The temperature warning came on, but the camera never shut down. Ambient temp about mid seventies.

I'm liking this camera more and more - a great improvement over the HS10 - the focus is much improved, and the detail is much better.

As usual, absolutely no pp (too much like hard work!). Photos in next post

Finally a demonstration of the zoom range (you can see the heron in the middle of the first shot). Taken from exactly the same spot (and as I was standing on a stone in the middle of the river, it's probably just as well!)

Hi Andrew,

Love these Velvia shots.

I myself is a big fan of Velvia mode. I also use DXO Velvia simulation mode to reduce my PP time

The castle and flower shots are my favourite in this series.

Re: HS20 Velvia shots

Andrew,

Another beautiful series from you; thanks! And, you know: you walk through that middle of the city with open eyes; I often wonder how people don't really "see" things, even if they're close.

I went on a 4 hour walk along the river Rhine yesterday and took about 150 fotos ... of course the overheat warning came on at some point, but only rather late; I guess it was because the sun was mostly in my back, and later, the sun was shining on the camera directly, so maybe it does not like that ...

Greetings from sunny Switzerland
Kurt

Andrew. Great SOOC results! Other than Velvia, are your other settings (color, tone, NR, etc.) at default, or have you adjusted?

Re: HS20 Velvia shots

Kurt, g, Danny, Herbie, Jerry thank you :).

Jerry - all standard settings except for NR which is set to low. It's one of the first things I changed when I got the camera!

I'm not sure if velvia's too much for me - might set colour to 'high' next time.

Herbie, I've heard reports of focus problems with this camera, but I haven't seen any with mine - the reliability and hot rate is far better than the HS10, and that's in quite challenging conditions, eg small birds in trees, metres away and surrounded by branches.

Excellent series. Love the IQ and detail on the full-zoom shot of the bird.

What Tulips! I can only see Daffodils, Daffodils are easy to get right but as you say Tulips are a lot harder.

Re: HS20 Velvia shots

These look like my F550 shots which you may have read I don't like. In my opinion they are being over processed by the camera.

Am I the only one seeing this, the Jpeg engine is over sharpening them. I think it's doing it to give the impression of detail where there is none.

Here is a 100% crop of your (original) full sized image, I don't mean to offend but it's hideous

Hi Paul, absolutely none taken :).

I'm very happy with the IQ of the HS20. I never expected DSLR-like IQ (or even s100fs-like IQ for that matter) from this camera, and I don't pixel-peep. Even if I did, nothing in your crop disturbs me.

I have the NR set to low, which leads to the noise which can be quite notceable when you peep. IMO, there is more detail than the HS10. Also, the crop is from the edge of the frame, where we know there is distortion due to the lens at wide angle.

Sorry to hear you're not happy with your F550 :(.

Remarkable series Andrew. I specifically like the robin shot in the shadow something that the other bridge cams like SX30 will have a hard time.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent series, Andrew. I love your birding shots and the castle. Really cool shot of the last one on full zoom with nice details in the feathers.

Re: Andew ...

Thanks Dave :).

I really enjoyed the HS10, and I was doubtful as to how much improvement the HS20 would provide, but I have to say, it has surpassed my expectations.

Especially handy is the ability to turn down the NR. This obviously results in more grain, but the increase in detail to me is appreciable.

Thanks Joms.

The dynamic range ability of this cam really helps out in these situations
