X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

In an April 4th post on Photo.net, Bob Todrick, a pro photographer from Edmonton, Alberta, said:

"Have had my X100 for a week now ... puts any of the 4/3 compacts out their to shame. Pretty sure they have a winner here...and Fuji has confirmed an X300 next year that will have interchangeble lenses."

When another Photo.net member asked him where he heard about an X300, he replied:

"I'm in the pro photo supply biz...this is from Fuji. They have decided to pursue what they call the serious prosumer market. The plans are that in the fall they will release an X200...a simplifed 'p&s' version of the x100. If these cameras do well they plan on the interchangeble lens version sometime next year."

I've quoted the most interesting parts of longer posts. Bob has been posting on Photo.net for 10 years.

As Shakespeare says, "This is the stuff that dreams are made on."

So!.. where can I preorder one? lol

I wonder if it'll be a better R-D1 (APS-C), or aimed right at the M9 (FF)

Would a "simplified 'P&S' version of the X100" be anything the "serious prosumer market" would be interested in? How could you "simplify" the X100 to turn it into a "P&S" without removing everything that would be of any interest to that market? Doesn't seem very logical to me.

What is even less logical is tying the development of an interchangeable lens version to the success of the "simplified 'P&S'" version. Fuji already knows there's interest in an interchangeable lens version; that's obvious to anyone studying the posts here, and if they're doing their due diligence -- and I have no reason to doubt that they are -- Fuji marketing is closely reading the posts here.

Nice try to slow down the X100 interest, making people to wait for a hypothetical coming camera

The question is who would be more interested to spread this false rumor, Canon or Nikon ?

You are absolutely right.
The entire story sounds not very logical to me.
Why should they make further X?00 development dependent
from the success of a p/s?

Re: X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

Is this guy a professional photographer or is he a person who owns a photo supply store?

The only reason I ask is because your post is a little confusing and his quote that the X100 puts any M43 to shame is a pretty broad statement.

The X100 sensor should be better than the smaller four thirds sensor but any fixed lens camera that puts the GH2 to "shame" would have to be one heck of a camera.

If this guy owns a pro photo supply store and he doesn't sell M43 cameras then I can understand his statement.

I'm also thinking there are this far quite many things that could be improved in the next version, so creating totally new version of current one doesn't sound plausible.

Re: X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

Well, it seems that is what the poster is suggesting (i.e. It's one heck of a camera...). The suggestion that Fuji is coming out with another version does sort of make sense (if only because Konica came out with a similar model) especially if, as I suspect, that the X100 is a co-development with Nikon who is certainly coming out with a similar beast soon. Fuji could have been allowed a competition-free period to sell the fixed lens version while Nikon will get a similar spell to launch its version which could be more of a competitor for the M9 (with Fuji introducing its version several months later).

Interesting times...

Re: X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

A simplified point and shoot version of the X100 might be in line with the 90's and early 2000's film cameras like the Minolta TC-1, Contax T3, Ricoh GR1v and suchlike. They were considered the cameras that pros used on holidays when they didn't want to carry a SLR system. This could prove interesting. I would be more interested in that than an interchangeable system, unless it proved the equal or better than the Contax G2.

and silly me thought that the next version would be a Fujifilm Finepix X101. That would put the X300 into a time frame that will have Starfleet Command out and about...so to speak.

Re: X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

How would they make the X100 a better p&s? It's already exceptionally simple. I suppose they could replace the shutter control into a Scene Mode selector, but the X100 is already a very good p&s.

Anyway, I don't believe it. The X100 has a very strong image as a pro's or enthusiast's compact camera of choice. If Fuji released toy versions of their X100, they'd also be cheapening its image, which would be incredibly short-sighted of Fuji. If Fuji was smart, they wouldn't go for the quick buck. They'd build themselves up as the brand you turn to if you want something that the big 2 or 3 brands dare not introduce first.

But, if say, "a pro" in the "photo supply biz" has lunch with some guy that works for Fuji Canada as a regional marketing manger or whatever, and the Fuji guy likes to talk like a bigshot, and says a lot of stuff that he thinks might be possible, but is based on very few hard facts that he has heard directly from Fuji Japan ...

... could that be all "this is from Fuji" really is ?

Maybe. Maybe not. But maybe.

Todrick said a simplified p&s, not a better one. Maybe it would have a slower lens, EVF-only viewfinder, no RAW, etc. I'm just guessing, but a hypothetical $599 X200 could be the best p&s ever at that price level.

An interchangeable lens X300 seems less likely, especially with the size of the X100's fixed lens and how close its big rear element is to the image sensor. Anyway, would you want an X300 with an interchangeable soup can zoom stuck on it like a NEX-5? The hybrid VF wouldn't see much but the lens.

If Fuji released toy versions of their X100, they'd also be cheapening its image, which would be incredibly short-sighted of Fuji.

Olympus started their micro four thirds line with the metal-body P1 and P2 and followed those with the very successful plastic-body PL1 and PL2 at much lower prices. Oly's image hasn't suffered.

Pros still tend to prefer the P2's solidity, additional capabilities and better controls. They don't seem to mind paying twice as much for a better camera, although it doesn't have some nice PLx features like built-in flash. But the PL2 is the big seller. Its image quality is the same as the P2, so most people are happier with the low-buck Oly.

Re: X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

Judging from the number of people here who like the X100 but think that it is priced too high there clearly is a market for a similarly styled but less expensive version.

The comment that is off the mark is that the launch of an interchangeable model would depend on the success of a P&S camera. It is the feedback from the X100 sales that will shape the future.

PS - on the question of lens size APS-C lenses are smaller than FF equivalents & they could be made slimmer & smaller if the camera has in-body stabilisation rather than in-lens IS which is only need for better Video but I don't think that this camera really appeals to Video enthusiasts ? Of course it would be possible to have both with OIS reserved only for a Video optimised zoom.

Re: X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

Yes I definitely agree there could be a potential niche market for more consumer level buyers out there such as myself. I like the styling of the X100 and the high ISO performance and image quality, but since we are used to shooting photos with the LCD screen or the EVF, we probably do not demand the hybrid optical viewfinder which drives the costs and price up.

It would be great to have a X200 model with a zoom lens, with 24-72 equivalent with f1.8 - 2.5 non-interchangeable. As long as they make the lens retractable like the E-PL2 14-42 kit so that it still can be small enough to carry in a small case and a large coat pocket. GH2 quality LCD and EVF. no OVF. That would be something I really want.

Although many would say why not just get a GH2, well the styling, controls and sensor is different. Maybe Samsung's next pro mirrrorless body will have something that looks retro and includes a EVF then that would be cool too.

Re: X200 and X300 rumors from a pro.

This has to be a false rumor as making it an interchangeable lens camera would spoil the whole concept, also Fuji have no legacy lenses like Leica who have them going back to the 50's and 20's with screw lenses, perhaps they will produce one that takes Leitz lenses but I doubt it.

Also as somebody said why spread a rumour that will make people wait for Mk11 or Mk111 instead of buying the X100, it would be very bad marketing.
