Fun with HDR and 7D.

Mare Island, in Alameda, California, is an closed Naval Yard that once employed 40,000 workers during World War II. It's a perfect location for HDR and Exposure Fusion techniques.

All images created with Canon 7D and Canon 17-55 F2.8 Lens. Processed in Photomatix and NIK software.

And a few images from local surroundings.

Nice work, I'm not a big fan of HDR but it seems to work on the shipyard shots nicely.

But Mare Island is actually in Vallejo.

Dang, those are good! I love HDR myself, and those are awesome examples.

How many exposures did you do of each pictures? How did you get the clouds to hold still long enough for you to get all the exposures?

Re: Love the Mare Island Shipyard shots

I used up to 6-8 exposures and worked fast. It's a pity that Canon only allows 3 bracketed images while Nikon allows you to shoot nine with one simple press of the shutter. I set C1,2, and3 to shoot 1-3 stops. This creates less contact with the camera body. Thanks for commenting.

Re: Love the Mare Island Shipyard shots

Same here, as I find most HDR shots to look a bit artificial and over-processed, but I think it really works for these.

Re: Love the Mare Island Shipyard shots

Do you set C1 to 1 stop over and under ,then set C2 to 2 stop over and under and to take the brackets, you simply flip to dial from C1 to C2 and to C3, taking the exposures at each C setting? Thanks

custom settings

Exactly. You will have a couple of images with the same exposures but the rest are useful for blending.

Re: custom settings

You can dial in exposure compensation to avoid duplicates (-3, 0, +3).
With one stop bracketing you'll end up with 9 contiguous exposures
from -4 to +4 one stop apart

Darkness is the monster and your shutter is your sword, aperture your shield and iso your armor. Strike fast with your sword and defend well with your shield and hope your armor holds up.
