OT - I did it... ordered an iPad 2

Check out the Square Trade warranty if you are looking into coverage. $95 for 2 years, $140 for 3 years of coverage including accidental damage (drops, spills, etc). Apple doesn't offer coverage for accidental damage and Best Buy charges about double for the same warranty service.

congrats!

I got the cam connector kit- and while works great to upload pics, the iPad don't let u organize the pics. Apple standard will throw them into a 'last uploaded' and an event folder which follows when the pics were either edited or freshly loaded. It's not Donizetti IMHO...

I really wish you have the option of managing pics better from a direct upload!

I'm sure you'll enjoy tho!!

Check this app out. It's arguably the best portfolio app for iPad, and it allows adding/syncing photos via iTunes, an included Mac desktop app, or via DropBox!

(I have NO affiliation with this product, I'm considering showing my work to clients via an iPad, and this seems to be the best app at the moment.)

That looks great!

If you don't want to pay full price and also don't mind waiting, you can get the AppShopper app and make a list of apps you want. When the app goes on sale (most do), they send an email. It's a good way to remember apps you hear about and it's accessible through a browser or iPad/iPhone app.

They even have Mac and Windows applications that scans your iTunes app library and adds it to a list of apps you already have.

It's all free and a great way to keep track of apps.

Kind of off topic I realize but wanted to share with my buddies who have been giving me advice. It's due to arrive between March 18 and 25. I'm excited. Thanks to all of you who gave me advice and suggestions. My final decision: black, 3G, 64G, with black smart cover. I decided to get the most I could as this will be lasting awhile. Can't wait to start figuring it out. I did get on dropbox and have already put up photos of my paintings so I can show them to folks on the iPad. I do have one question about the photos on the iPad. Any way to put them in folders and/or view them in an organized way?
The main problem is that Apple restricts access to the photos from apps. Thus it is not (currently) possible to create albums in the iPad photo store

Photo Org
Just found it. Its free so no harm in testing

Photo-Sort

Will import photos and videos and let you organize them. Can also upload them to a server on the net.

CameraSync

Upload image files incl raw to a service on the net. Many services can be used incl ftp server and DropBox.

Other apps you might like:

PhotoShop Express

Simple editing of photos. You can upload/download photos from photoshop.com. Its free.

Filterstorm
A better editor than Photoshop Express.

This is true, but let's not forget that if you want a certain structure for a collection of photos that you've created outside of the iPad, it's actually very easy to do this. The restriction is that you have to do it through IPhoto. Within iPhoto you can create whatever structure you want, and then you can sync only what you want to your iPad. I do this myself for my photos and it works pretty well. In my case, I actually keep a completely different raid array for my iPhoto library, where it's role is two fold: it serves as a JPEG backup of the photos that span a number of drives containing RAW files that I process in Lightroom, and it of course serves as a point where I can sync photos to my various Apple devices - Apple TV, iPod Touch, IPhone, iPad. It sounds like in Ann's case this might work out fine without having to buy any additional software, assuming she already has iPhoto...

Only problem is that Ann wants to travel with an iPad and use the Camera Connection Kit to get the photos onto the iPad. In that case iPhoto (or any other Mac program) is not available. And there is no way to put a structure in Photo Album.

Even if you have created the albums via iPhoto or Aperture there is no way to move photos between albums.

i heard it's a great camera. 75 megapixels, comes with best kit lens, something like 7-700/f1.0. is that true? :D

iPad's Photos app arranges images by Photos (entire Library), Albums and Events. Separate Events are created every time you import new images.

It seems like a big pain to do, but with a certain amount discipline, you could do smaller import sessions (unlike the way I dump several hundred images at a time ;-) ), to create separate Events and do more arranging later. Once back in iPhoto on your Mac, it's a simple task to create albums and move images around to wherever you like.

Personally, I dislike iPhoto and don't use it because of the opaque way photos are stored, so I'm unsure exactly how iPhoto (or Aperture) would handle separate Events, but it seems they should be able to be organized/renamed later on your Mac.

I've used the late and lamented iView Media Pro (now Expression Media) for years and am trying to find a new Mac cataloguing application that handles RAW and let's me use my own file structure... sorry Aperture. Lightroom looks the most promising, but I need time to evaluate it.

Yep, I got that. iPhoto only solves one problem, but it serves it pretty well and it has the distinct advantage of allowing you to sync with the same structure between all of your devices, not just the iPad. So, for the stuff that hasn't just come off the card, it works pretty well for me.

For things I've just imported, folder structures aren't very important since I'm typically just handling a handful of photos to get them up on Facebook, etc. But that's just the way I use it, so certainly YMMV.

Anne,

I have the out of date iPad. Love it.

I work tethered quite a lot using an Eye-Fi card in my GH2 and viewing the images on the pad with Shutter Snitch.

I've lost track of when you want to see the pix you have taken on the pad. If tethered is not what you need you could still download them later on.

Cool solution! It only works over a wi-fi network, right, not out in the field?

I have a MiFi called the Huawei E585. It acts as a wireless router so I don't need access by WiFi to the internet.

I paid for it by not buying the iPad with 3g. But I can put my iPhone sim card into the MiFi and that gives the iPad a 3g connection when I need it.

I am not sure but it may be possible to jailbreak the iPad and get it to perform as a wireless router on its own - but I felt safer with my route.

The recent iOS 4.3 update allows you to make your iPhone into, what Apple calls, a personal hotspot for sharing 3G internet access. I don't know what that would solve except maybe uploading images to Dropbox.

http://www.apple.com/ios/

You'd definitely want an unlimited data plan using that scenario!

I just did a test. By setting you iPhone up as a Personal Hotspot is is possible to connect two units to the hotspot and they can talk to each other. So an Eye-Fi in camera could talk directly to the iPad. At that point no data has passed to the internet so the data plan is not thouched.

If you later upload the files to Dropbox (or any other server) that will of course cost you.

I my case iPhoto solves nothing! The Mac is at home and I'm in the field with my iPad.

A few hundred photos makes a difference.
