Whose FF issue have been fixed with the K-5 1.03 Firmware ?

Would like to get impressions from owners who had the low light FF issue and now say it has been fixed with the new firmware. Also, would like to hear from those who had tried the new firmware and thinks there is no improvements.

PLEASE INCLUDE THE EXIF (APERTURE, ISO AND SHUTTER)....THANK YOU!

My camera had very low level FF only if there was no light point in the frame

1.03 has resolved this

For test I'm using my Generic Model (GM: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=37564278 )

The following comparison shots were taken with my K-5 (manufactured Nov 2010) and DA 18-55 AL II at 55mm with not too low tungsten light (EXIF LV = 4.5). The white rectangle (30x23 cm) fits approx. into the AF-frame of the screen. Distance is about 1.5m and the distance between the marks is 10cm which is about 8cm along the lens axis.

Centre focussing was in tungsten light without any aid (and shutter would be at 0.7 sec) but the shots were taken with flash for better readout.
Please use the enlarged view to see the differences in sharpness and DoF!
With FW 1.02:

With FW 1.03:

I made a small series of hand held shots, which shows small differences but the very huge FF fault is gone! The above shots show the improvement of FW 1.02 versus 1.03 very well.

If you want to know all EXIF data of the shots, you may download the originals and use ExifTool or PhotoMe to read the EXIF data.

my minor FF issues are gone now, all shots are in perfect focus with my Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens tested in a dim to moderate tungsten lit room.

Just have made my experiments. 3 identical shots before the update and 3 shots after. Significant FF, which could be barely neutralized by "-10" correction now is gone.

Thanks Pentax, now I have completely great camera!

Mine has not been fixed by the FW update. Primarily because I just ordered it today and I won't have it until tomorrow, but I will report back.

Seriously, I've been reading all of the FW v1.3 reports and, with very few exceptions, it seems to have done the trick. I'm hopeful that K-5 number 4 with FW 1.3 will be a keeper.

Oh yes!

I am so happy to report that my FF problems are now in the past. I won't post any samples because it's been blatantly obvious since the first couple of shots I took after updating.

Holy cr*p!!! It's like having a brand new camera after three not so great months with it.

I've tested the DA 35/2.4 wide open at 1/20-1/60, ISO 1600 in my living room with tungsten lights that used to make the K5 FF like hell, and focus was perfect in almost every shot I took. I also tried the 18-55 kit lens at different focal lengths and apertures and the results were almost as good. Maybe a few more shots slightly front-focused, but most of them spot on.

I also happened to attend a studio shoot this evening, and the 18-55 behaved much better under low to medium-intensity modelling lights than before the update.

I haven't tested the DA70 wide open yet, but the results with the other two lenses have been so spectacular that I'm pretty sure it'll be fine. As far as I'm concerned, this issue is no more.

I just wish Pentax had been a little bit more diligent (the issue is known to them since at least late november), and above all, more open about it from the start. It's disrespectful to their clients.

Other than that, happy as Larry!

Re: Oh yes!

Open with their clients? From what I can gather they aren't even open amongst themselves. It seems that Pentax USA still has no information about the FF issue and it's resolution other than what they can see on Pentax Japan's web site announcing FW v1.3.

Mine is good now. Previously saw about 20mm ff at distance of about 1.5m at EV of -1.4, now it's pretty much spot on.

I agree, but it is a little difficult. Finding the root cause and implementing a solution to a technical problem can be fairly difficult and tedious. First they have to determine there actually is an issue (gather complaints and once they have enough complaints start investigating it themselves). After they determine that there is in fact a problem, they need to come up with what might be causing the problem and systematically eliminate those possible causes.

Once they have decided on the root cause they will need to plan on how they will fix it, and how their fix will impact other functions in the camera. Only then can they implement the code change in this case (which might be the easiest part of the process and might only be a couple lines of code), and re-verify that the firmware functions as it should. This might mean retesting every function in the camera (or at least any function that could be impacted by the change).

It is a tedious process and you don't want to be changing too many things at once (why the flash will probably end up in a different firmware upgrade). Where I think Pentax could do better, and what you said about them being open, is it would have been nice if they acknowledged the issue and stated they were working on a fix. Might help keep people from returning cameras, etc.

Huge improvement....

I just took a shot tonight of a guy running across the street in low light and it pretty much nailed for such an extremely difficult situation.

That said what I have noticed so far is-

  • You can still get FF if you have now exceptional low light. Just that the "line" at which it happens has been moved dramatically towards lower light. I think this is pretty acceptable- as light goes further down to this point cameras start giving up. I would prefer though that the K-5 marked back that it can't just focus, but I guess it's also a manufacturer choice between giving you potentially something almost ok vs nothing.

  • I am still trying to train myself to use MF This makes it tempting to use AF again hehe.

  • A shot I took of a sign a few times now came up sharper than CDAF which surprised me (in mixed low light).

Re: Oh yes!

Lock_fc

This is great news, I was looking out for your confirmation as after our little tête-à-tête I had a good understanding of how your camera was (miss) behaving.

I could empathise with your frustration once I understood how much worse your camera was to mine so I'm really pleased its resolved.

Don't forget to post us some pictures.

Only slightly fixed

Before update AF correction to -8/-10 was needed for all my lens
With the Tamron 18-250 FF was so huge -10 was not sufficient

AF Corrections values after update below EV 4:
FA50/1.4: -5
FA35/2: -6
DA200/2.8: -5
16-50/2.8: fixed
FA135/2.8: fixed ? (need further tests)
Tamron 18-250: -5

The AF works far better with my K20D (and even my old K10D) with all these lenses

So I'm a bit disapointed :-/

Re: Whose FF issue have been fixed with the K-5 1.03 Firmware ?

Well, no more FF for me...

I can trick the camera into failing by shooting very specific targets (a bright red object at EV0 or below, for instance), but it's so specific and complicated that I'm confident I'll never encounter such problematic cases in real life...

Seems like the AF is faster in really low light situations, too... Less checks...
