X100 RAW processed - it's terrific

We've all been waiting to see what the X100 can do in RAW, but have been unable to open the samples in any programs.

In this thread, http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1020&thread=37858823 , user ncruzes did us a big favor. He used a special patched version of a RAW converter to convert the RAWs to PNG.

I downloaded those PNGs from his dropbox, and converted them to TIFF in iPhoto.

Then used Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS4 to process the TIFF as I would any RAW file -- denoise, sharpening, adjusting exposure, color, contrast, etc.

For those who complained that the X100 produces soft, flat images -- rest assured -- the RAWs can deliver the goods.

Here is a link to download the "before" (unprocessed TIFF) http://db.tt/uM3tnCm and the "after" (post-processed TIFF) http://db.tt/dvXlxHS

For those who don't want to download 60 MB of TIFFs, here's the "before" and "after" as full size JPGS.

Good work. But rest assured that bashers will come up with excuses to pick a bone from egg.

The detail in these images is really excellent. If the finished camera produces this level of detail for me I will be one happy camper.

Awesome! The pictures look a bit over processed to me, but I think this shows what you can expect from the camera when working with raw.

Interestingly, the JPEG files also exhibit a similar trait as the raw files. Perhaps Fuji is looking at user feedback from the beta pictures and adjusting their JPEG engine?

As long as the RAW files deliver though, I think that will be awesome.

Applied a NIK filter for curiosity and got this:

I like playing with the filters and they generally make the sky and the image noisier. Applied the Poliarizer filter in NIK, did a levels adjustment, and smart sharpen to overprocess the image for the heckuvit and got this slightly too large of an image but... you be the judge...

A simple request

Thank you Brandon for the time you took to download and PP the RAW image.

I'd like to take the opportunity to extend the request I made in the original thread. The 3 images I posted come from QueSabesDe's review. If you have access to and/or know of any other RAW files, please point me/us in their direction. Thanks!

Very useful thanksuest

Thanks Brandon . I downloaded you file and worked on it in LR3. With a bit of work you can get a great file. this is no M9 leica lens image but then you wouldn't expect it. taking more sharpening and extra work than I usually do. All the same am very happy and don't regret placing an order

To my taste you over sharpened the images, but I agree that the original images are maybe too soft. Liked the applied contrast/saturation though.

It should be, "The images are sharpened too much for my taste"

All the whiners complaining about sharpness now will go into hiding. The lens is great. The sensor is great. The camera is superb. Good for Fuji....and us!

Re: Too much traffic... link is now closed down

Dude... you've caused a link close down! Dropbox have closed the link due to too much traffic. Fuji must be counting the money. It seems Fuji may have nailed our desire for a small, well designed Leica-ish designed large sensor camera. It's taken a long time to get here hasnt it? The big players have been sadly missing in action on this havent they? (Mike Johnson at Online Photographer has been rattling on about this for a LONG time!)

These big camera companies remind me of the US car industry a few years ago. Hopelessly out of touch. I remember the last big US car show before the crash. What a lot of huge, gas guzzling, ugly, inefficient loads of crap they looked. Even this dumb hippie could see where it was heading. So I wonder how this current brave new world will pan out?

PS: I saw a young Asian guy wondering down the Fremantle mall with a HUGE full framer and a smaller DSLR hanging off him. I thought another week of that will possibly disable him. I think I realized then that my K20 alone is way too much frankly. So I for one will be watching with interest. Small really is beautiful IMHO.
