upgrading a 30D to a 7D. Anyone using the tamron 17-50 + 7D?

I'm considering an upgrade of my 30D to a 7D.
I have the tamron 17-50 2.8 and canon 70-200F4IS.

Should I also sell the tamron and replace it with the canon 17-55IS? (I mostly hear that the IQ of the tamron is close to the canon)?

Or should I keep it and buy an additional lens like the 24-105IS?

I have these lenses too, they are very good.

I could be wrong but by what i know the Tamron is sharper. Have a look at this comparison.

This is a nice idea, the 24-105 is a very good lens. But i bought a canon 15-85mm to be my walk around lens, i love the 15 wide angle.
My next lens will be a canon 10-22mm.

FWIW from someone who does not own nor has ever used the Tamron 17-50mm lens, I cannot recall ever reading or hearing anything but praise for the performance of the lens.

+1 for keeping the Tamron

The Tamron seems great... I've used the Canon 17-55 and it's really good... But for the price difference, assuming you were to sell the Tamron... You could get a really nice prime like the 85 1.8, or even the 10-22 to extend your range... ?

If you decide to sell the Tamoron, how much would you think you could get for it.'

What did you pay for the Tamoron- and what will it cost you to replace it with the Canon 17-55IS?

pretty amazing pairing, my standard APS-C walk-around set

not unless you need a bit faster AF and IS

Or should I keep it and buy an additional lens like the 24-105IS?

not unless you don't mind giving up wide shots and wish to take a lot more longer ones, then it might make some sense (although the tamron 28-75 is nice and even sharper but if you need IS or don't want to give up some color/contrast then the L is better), but honestly, it's just not as sharp as the tamron 17-50, has no f/2.8 and costs a ton more so....

EDIT: actually if I wanted more reach, I'd go 15-85 IS way before the 24-105L myself

cold dead fingers!

You can have my Tamron 17-50 when you pry it out of my cold dead fingers. I will never sell it.

I use it on a 30D and a T2i. I think I have a very good copy of this lens (made in China, BTW) or maybe they are all really good. Anyway, I find that it is very good on the T2i, but you have to be more careful to keep the camera steady or use a faster shutter speed than with 8 MP. That is also true with all my lenses, including the 70-200 f/4 L IS.

For absolute maximum image quality try it at 35mm and 5.6. Between 24-35 mm and f/4 to f/5.6 is the peak sweetness of this lens. Compare that to a host of other lenses and I think you will see why it is so good and up to the task of 18 MP.

I went the same way. Traded the 30d for a 7d and sold the tammy and got me a 17-55 F2.8 IS. I find the Canon 17-55mm a little sharper but not to much. The rendering of the colors is better IMO.

The 7d is a great camera with hundreds of ways to tweak your camera. However I still love the pictures I made with the 30d. Both camera come very close. For me the whole transition hasn't been shocking. I don't have experience with the 24-105mm but from what I heard it's a solid lens which delivers great photos

you may want to check this linkon Tamron 17-50 and 7D compatibility:
http://www.dslr-forum.de/showpost.php?p=7463669&postcount=407
Or alternatively on
http://www.canonrumors.com/category/photography/third-party-lenses/

Where they report the following (it is for the 17-50 VC but non-VC maybe affected too?):
Quote

We observed a phenomenon where the followings lenses won’t use the outer cross-type sensors of EOS 40/50/60/7D cameras right.

The lenses that show this problem are (all Tamron):

  • 17-50 f/2.8 VC

  • 60 f/2 Macro

  • 70-200 f/2.8

  • 10-24 f/3.5-4.5

To get a bit more into the detail of the problem – on the 40/50/60D cameras the outer cross-type sensors only work as line-type sensors. To be a bit more correct, they actually work in the same direction as they would work on cams like the 30D or like the 400/450/500/550D. When it comes to the 7D the outer sensors are also only working as line-type sensors (but it seems, that the EF 50 1.2L also has problems to use them correct).

where are those outer cross-type sensors responsible for?
What should I notice about this in real life?

AF.

I suggest that you refer to:
http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php/topic,286.0.html

if you scroll down you will see that there is a good explanation by the forum member "Neuroatomist" on the difference between line sensor and cross-type sensor.

Basically you lose the benefit of having cross-type sensors for those outer sensors, making them less sensitive.
So the AF performance with Tamron lenses on the listed Canon cameras is reduced.
