Simon: you really don't want people to talk about this, do you?

Original thread, shut down by seemingly insecure admin:

Use a URL shortener? Most browsers have this facility as a plugin so you easily by-pass any silly blocking? e.g. http://goo.gl/2DWrq

Hi Prime

I've actually enjoyed your posts over the past year or so. You call them as you see them, and you know how to use a camera. But you do tend to jump the gun. I'm not sure who I'm supposed to be a puppet of.

In my first post I was upfront about it being a first post. I was simply expressing my opinion on the thread's topic when it was abruptly shut down for no apparent reason. I threw this thread up because I think people should have the chance to talk about it.

What do you think about the URL blocking issue?
Pete

I'm writing while this thread will probably locked or deleted shortly.

As a user I find URL blocking silly and offensive.

Now I see that both sites don't want to be criticized publicly in any way.

Not calling you a bad guy (don't even know who you are to be honest) - it's just the admins are going to see this:

And probably make a quick decision.

RE: URL blocking (particularly PentaxForums - as this seems to be the primary 'issue') - I think the guys at PF made their own bed here. At one point Marc (admin at PForums) was making threads about specials being offered at B&H ... which is a sponsor of the PF site. He was also making comments about Amazon (the owner of this site) that were false - essentially trying to smear them to gain business at his sponsors. I would suspect it was those sorts of actions that resulted in the URL blocking. I like PForums, but there are definitely some issues going on over there involving money, sponsorship, dictator admins, admins using marketplace, etc. I'm not shocked that DPR has no interest in renewing contact with that PF.

An Example ...

Not smart. Particularly the part where he fails to identify himself as an admin at PF (and likely someone with direct financial gain) to customers buying from B&H, etc. The endorsement is one thing - the lack of honesty (and motivation for such statements) is another.

I hope not, though I was trying to be provocative with this thread, hoping to stimulate some discussion. It's Simon's forum and it is his decision what he does with it, of course.

Philip, I am going to look at those URL shorteners, I've seen those links and never really thought about what they were...

I don't see how Marc could have profited from his post. B&H and Adorama don't send checks to people who recommend them in these forums. He was just expressing his opinion and the fact that he is a PF moderator was not relevant.

I've been out of touch here lately - way too busy - but someone altered me to this The above is full of major inaccurate statements that need to be corrected:

1) dpreview has been blocking pentaxforums for years. I don't remember the exact date it started, but I suspect it predated my being a moderator there.

2) I have no financial interest in pentaxforums whatsoever. I do not gain in any way if pentaxforums' sponsors make money, I don't gain in any way if pentaxforums makes money, nor do I have any vested interest in whether dpreview's owners make or lose money. Implying that I was "trying" to smear anyone, and furthermore making up a completely nonsensical reason for why I might have done this thing that I did not do - that's ridiculous and has no basis in any sort of reality.

3) Nowhere in the message you quoted from me did I say a thing about Amazon that isn't true and in fact easily verified to be so. Many of their "partners" do tend to charge highly inflated prices over those of legit dealers like B&H and Adorama. No one who has compared prices on a regular basis can possibly deny the facts of what I stated. They are in many cases a terrible place to buy Pentax gear from, because the price are often much, much higher than they should be, and that is precisely because you are not always dealing with Amazon themselves. That was the case with the specific lens on the specific day I made that comment - the partner through whom Amazon was offering the lens was charging almost 50% more than the going rate. It's the case with the DA21 as of when I am writing this (6 PM, MDT 11/14/10) - the partner through whom Amazon is currently offering the lens is charging 60% more than the standard price for this lens. I'm not accusing Amazon of wrongdoing here, but I am pointing out that at any given point in time, the prices they offered through their featured partners is often terrible . This is not true of all products, but it is true of Pentax lenses. Anyone who believes otherwise simply hasn't been paying attention. Precisely because Amazon typically has such great prices on so many products, people often do not even bother checking elsewhere. You can get away with that on many products, but it would be a huge mistake to not look elsewhere in the case of Pentax lenses. If you believe otherwise, then why not go out and buy a DA21 from them right now?

4) Note it's the partners I identified as engaging in these unethical pricing practices. I have no problems with Amazon's ethics here - a fact I could have made clearer.

5) If Amazon was really so put off by my comments - which were made right here on dpr - don't you think a more logical response would have been to simply delete that post, or ban me personally, rather than commit the same ridiculous logical fallacy you did and decide to arbitrarily blame pentaxforums for my actions? note by this I'm not saying Amazon is wrong for reacting this way. I'm saying it's just one more piece of evidence demonstrating how completely insane your slanderous accusations are.

Hi Marc!

1) dpreview has been blocking pentaxforums for years. I don't remember the exact date it started, but I suspect it predated my being a moderator there.

I remember they harvested dpreview for email addresses of users?

Unless that was another pentax forum (?), I would think this would be a potential reason for blocking.

Cannot comment on the other points, wasn't there, haven't seen it, never heard about it.

Cheers
Jens

Andy, please check your facts thoroughly.

Go to Amazon now and check the price for DA21 for example. I did right now an their "supplier" gives the price of $799, and that one is "discounted" from $993. Holly my!
When on Earth DA21 was $993?
That's almost as twice as its RRP at Adorama.

Marc - while I understand your umbrage at Prime's post ....

... it's a pity you recognise or dignify it with a reasoned response. When people are obviously a sandwich short of a picnic, you waste your time by presenting a detailed and well-argued reply to them.

For a while there it looked as though Andy the leopard had changed his spots but it didn't last long. I suspect he's stopped taking his meds again.

The question now is would this have happened with any of the other brand forums, more specifically the largest Canon and Nikon forums out there? I mean, who the heck cares if a Pentax forum links off of your site...it's a freaking Pentax site! That's like being emotionally traumatized by a little kids insults. Nope.

Weird ... because in that same Ad, just below the price is listed:

"In Stock.
Ships from and sold by H AND B DIGITAL."

They make it clear it isn't sold by Amazon ... in BOLD . Why would you look for the highest price on the internet that you can find ($993 from some tiny company - not even the first company listed) and parrot it to me in this thread? Weird.

That lens is not sold BY Amazon, but by a third-party vendor selling THROUGH Amazon.
