Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

I have been trying to find a reliable way to trigger external flashes with the NEX, particularly so I can use my infrared converted NEX with flash. This way seems to work quite well, I am able to reliably trigger 3 flashes that I use for shooting in my small lightbox. I have tested shutter speeds from 1/5 - 1/160 and got good results.

Here you see a wireless radio flash trigger taped to the NEX on-board flash and attached to a cheap optical slave flash trigger. I then cover this assembly with a small bag made for my lensbaby so it does not leak any light when triggering the external flashes:

Just to show the NEX triggering its own flash for this shot - the flashes from above and the side were triggered by the NEX's onboard flash, not by the camera that took this picture:

Here is a quick test shot with the NEX-5 triggering 3 flashes - 1 above in a softbox (Canon 430EZ), 1 on the right through an umbrella (Minolta 5600HS) and 1 on the left through umbrella (Minolta 5400HS). Just to prove its possible to trigger flashes with the NEX (I had been having trouble getting it to trigger an optical slave, but with the radio popper trick it works much better).

Here ithe radio trigger I used:

And here is the optical trigger:

I am still hoping for Sony to give us real options for controlling flashes, but this will do the trick for now.

PS, I actually do clean things before I take pictures of them, but no matter what theres still dust and particles on things I take pics of.

Oh nice! I thought I'd thunk this one up first...oh well. I have been searching high and low, on this forum and google, bing etc looking for flash trigger options for the NEX, then thought I would give this a try. Cant believe I missed your post...

Does not NEX have pre-flash?

I see a lot of discussion on the DX page about using the optical trigger with digital cameras featuring P-TTL type of metering.

i haven't paid attention - this system works nice and syncs no prob up to 1/200s - it probably don't then?

Re: Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

Ive seen that in my quest to find a real flash solution for the NEX. They just want to lure in naive Sony NEX and DSLR owners, look at the pics, its just a standard hot shoe foot to attach it to the camera.

That's a really innovative approach to going wireless Nice post!

Instead of the gaffer tape, have you tried velcro? It may make dissaembly easier for ya. Just wondering, what sort of sync speed did you manage to get out of this combi? Any chance its around 1/250 or faster?

Should be up to 1/160 second. That's what I get at least.

Re: Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

Hmmm....how about using a a really right stuff flash bracket like this in conjunction with the wireless trigger set up?

Re: Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

Sure that would work if you want to drop $350 on that bracket... For what I need its not what I am looking for, I just want to control my flashes mounted on stands.

Re: Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

Pretty slick "solution". I've got a NEX-3 coming in next week and have been researching how to hook up one of my Yongnuo wireless transmitters. I pictured there being some manner of cable that would slip into the accessory port and end in a hotshoe that I could put my transmitter on. It didn't need to look elegant, it just needed to work.

Of course, of course, just tape an optical trigger with transmitter attached to the NEX's puny flash! This is a controlled flash scenario solution (other Yongnuo receivers with strobes, on light stands) and that's really all I was looking for.

Or, not having the optical trigger firing strobes on light stands but, indeed, a strobe with Yongnuo receiver on it just handheld over the NEX, like I do all the time to point my strobe in multiple directions. It would help to have a third hand.

Still, it'd be nice to have that cable I talked about so I wouldn't have to mount the puny flash at all.

Re: Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

How is it that the TTL Pre-flash not triggering the optical trigger??

I bought the same setup but it is not working................flash firing too early with the TTL pre flash.

Re: Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

Hi, all the information I can find says that that optical slave reacts to the pre-flash and a number of people have queried this also... Does your NEX somehow not fire a pre-flash?

Can you relay the settings you used on your NEX5 to trigger the flash? Thanks, Dave

Re: Wireless radio trigger for NEX!!

...

Hi All,

This idea is great, but using a 'passive' slave flash trigger may not work well for other camera pre-flash sequences. I did a project years ago on a digital slave flash trigger and now I am building it again wirelessly.

I am fitting the PCB into a cheap remote control case and powered the circuit with a 23A 12V battery. I use a high-speed, low-power 8-bit microprocessor to do the job. So far it supports 3 different types of cheap wireless slave flash receivers and has 4 programmable pre-flash modes to due with different pre-flash sequences, I am also planning to add an ‘auto-learn’ mode later. The highest synchronize speed for NEX is 1/160 and for LX3 is 1/2000s.

So far it not only works with my NEX5, it also works for almost every DC and D-SLR cameras I owned under all flash modes conditions; including a700, KMD5D, LX3, F30, Canon 300D …

I am working on the second PCB layout and finalizing the firmware programming now. Hoping that the search for a workable wireless slave flash trigger solution to handle the ‘pre-flash’ will be over soon.

Wireless remote trigger mounted on NEX's flash

Supporting 3 different types of receivers
A) Yongnuo YN-04 II
B) PT-04 (brand ?)
C) JYC (model number ?)

Triggered by NEX5 at 1/160s

Triggered by LX3 at 1/2000s !
