A manta stole my Canon ... you won't believe this

This might be one of the craziest underwater videos you have ever seen...

We produce a scuba diving television show called "Into the Drink," and were on-location on the Big Island of Hawaii. One of our cameramen was capturing footage when suddenly, one of the manta's giant wings hooked his light system, and darted off with his Canon 5D Mark II rig. Our other cameraman caught the entire theft on camera, and the manta, carrying the stolen photo rig, captured some amazing footage of the nighttime reef. Remarkably, the camera rig was found completely intact after an eight-minute run by the manta, just yards from our dive boat.

It must be depressing...

...to be a photographer who has their gear taken by their subject and then returned with images he or she cannot possibly replicate and the subject is a fish!

Re: amazing

I wonder what it was thinking, like maybe it thought the rig was food and then when it couldn't taste anything, 'well, that's useless' and then drops it under the boat.

That was amazing, and you got the camera back!

If you enjoyed that, you might be interested in this. A Dutch couple, holidaying on Aruba lost their camera to a sea turtle, which took it all the way to a Florida beach, where it was spotted by a law enforcement officer. He saw photos of the owners and identified Aruba by some landmarks in video taken before the camera was snatched/snared by the turtle. The camera was eventually returned to the owners when someone recognized them, after the law enforcement officer had posted them on the web.
