100-400mm L IS vs. 70-200mm L IS with 2xII extender

Does anyone have any experience with both of these lenses? I was thinking of selling my 100-400mm L to purchase the 70-200 mm L IS and making up for the tele loss with a 2xII extender. Is the image quality comparable?

I've tried both combos.......

Keep the 100-400L. The 2x was really built to work with high end primes, not with zooms. I've tried the 2 x on my 70-200f2.8L IS, and it truely sucked. I got better results by stacking two 1.4Xs...one Canon, with one Kenko Pro. You can't stack two Canon's together, they won't fit.

New 70-200MKII with 2x extender.

Did you try the canon 2x extender MKII with the new 70-200 MKII? I have great results with this combo. Just sold my 100-400L.

Was able to use autofocus with my 50D. This was shot wide open, The IS on the new 70-200 MKII works awesome with the 2x extender also.

If you want a 70-200 f/2.8 lens to use with extenders you really want the recent 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. It is incredible with either the EF 1.4X II or EF 2X II. However, you really only need the 1.4X if you want to shoot at f/4 between 200 and 280mm because the EF 2X II works so well you can just zoom back a bit (but you will be at f5.6).

The earlier 70-200 f/2.8 IS is not nearly as adept with converters. I was not happy at all with it and the EF 2X II and even with the EF 1.4X II the lens had to be stopped down at least a stop to get reasonable IQ. And this is doubly bad because with longer focal lengths often a higher shutter speed is desired.

Canon has just announced two new tele-extenders (EF 1.4X III and EF 2X III) and only time will tell if they are designed to improve performance across the board or are specially optimized for super-teles.

But the current extenders work really well with both the 70-200 f/4 IS and 70-200 f/2.8 IS II (although the f/4 IS will not AF with the 2X on anything but a 1 series body).

I have not owned the 100-400 zoom so I cannot comment first hand on IQ comparisons between it and the new 70-200 f/2.8 IS II except to say the samples I have seen from the 100-400 (at 400mm) are very comparable to the 70-200 f2.8 IS II (also at 400mm). A good copy of the 100-400 will likely beat a good copy of the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II with 2X but a mediocre copy of the 100-400 will likely lose to a good copy of the zoom with a 2X.

Did they give a release date on the 3rd gen extenders? Wonder how pricey they will be

Don't know about dates but I've heard they will be $500 each. Ouch!, However, probably worth the extra cost. I doubt they would go to the trouble of chipping the extenders if it didn't offer a significant advantage over non-chipped extenders.

You can easily stack Canon's if you use an extension tube inbetween.

i didn't like the results from the 70-200 with the extender,,I have a 5d mk II and it wasnt sharp enough..maybe it was my lens , i dunno. I prefer the 100-400 instead. I aso tried the 2x extender on the 100-400..didnt like that either,so im selling the extender on ebay.

No, I have the first version. I'll probably try out the new 2x II on it soon.

I think you want photos with two 1.4X's stacked with an extension tube in the middle? That was the suggestion from one who didn't like the 70-200 f/2.8 IS with the 2X. But the new 70-200 f2.8 IS II works really well with a 2X, the only issue is AF is slowed down. So there is no need to use two 1.4X's with the new lens. The 2X will get you more reach too.

Here are some examples with the 70-200 f2.8 IS II and EF 2X II. Keep in mind they have all been cropped moderately for composition:

And the following two were taken with a 25mm extension tube (no TC) near minimum focus distance (one at 190 mm and one at 70mm) w/ 100% crops after each full image:

I really doubt the new EF 2X III will provide much help with the 70-200 f2.8 IS (Mk I). The problem is not with the current TC's it's just that the lens is not that sharp at 200mm (especially wide open which is where you often need to be with a 2X mounted).
