...the near end of that log is quite blurry. However, artistically, I like all the pics -- very nice!

The 16-35 II is on my short list and hope to have one in time for my Sept trip. Thanks for reminding me why I want one.

Yea, these are great shots. I like 4 and 5, but the one with your daughter captures that special sense of joy and wonderment we all have as a child of the world around us. I have the 16-35 II, and yes it's a noticable improvement over the original version, although I don't like the barrell distortion on the lens. Thanks for sharing those shots.

I like the dream-like quality of No. 2.

Did you use any distortion correction in post?

Nice images.
Is the Samyang easy to focus and
would you say it's a decent lens?

easy to focus. you can also buy a focus confirmation chip for 14 bucks from ebay (which I have). yes, it is sharper than 16-35 II.

focus confirmation chip for Samyang 14?

Thanks for your excellent comparison photos. I just ordered the Samyang 14mm for my 5DII.

Please advise which ebay vendor you purchased the chip from, and any advice on installing it.

Thanks in advance.

Re: focus confirmation chip for Samyang 14?

peter, I bought this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220630037320

there is another seller that has full programing instruction. i dont remember why I bought from this seller. comes from hongkong in a small envelope, no instructions.

Need some superglue. take any other lens that you have, and put it side by side with your samyang with back facing up, and the red dot denoting mount line up for installing the lens lined up. you can see where the chip needs to go. it actually needs to be glued to the ridge and not in the trough. here is an image that may help.

So I see nothing wrong with your 16-35, so why bother with the Samyang 14 ?

Re: focus confirmation chip for Samyang 14?

well, as it turns out, the 16-35 actually required some tuning and is out to canon. I have a nikon 14-24 arriving. stay tuned for a runoff between those 3. I am just and Gear head I suppose. My sigma 12-24 meanwhile has found a new home.

First of all, it's fun to be a Gear Head....

I received my Bower 14mm 3 weeks ago after I saw some of your other posted image, and that is a fun little lens.

I have been shooting the 14-24G on my 1DS2 for a while and recently got a D3 and now the 14-24G is back to its mother land, live on a Nikon camera, and the Samyang 14 is on the 1DS2 for the most part, my 17-40L was sold.

Looking forward to see your 3 lens shoot out, but I am afraid your 16-35L will have a new home too very soon after you received your 14-24G.

Have fun with your new toy.

Any thoughts on how the Samyang 14mm compares to the Canon 14mm L.

Re: focus confirmation chip for Samyang 14?

I dont own canon 14. For me its simple. If you need autofocus, buy the canon. If you dont, it is probably very hard to justify it. Photozone comparison shows the samyang to be slightly sharper than the canon, which is amazing. It also has a little less vignetting stopped down. Both do very well with CA. I can tell you that the microconrast and color are as good if not better than 16-35 2.8L II. The canon definitely has less distortion (3 vs 4%) and less complex distortion. I have found easy to fix this with software. the price difference is of course a lot. so it depends on your needs. And this comes from someone who paid 1600 for 85 1.2 and sold his 85 1.8 for 300. There it was worth it.

Re: focus confirmation chip for Samyang 14?

I have just arrived in Bermuda with my new Bower 14mm lens (Samyang). Unfortunately inside the suitcase something must have hit the front of the lens and broke the lens cap. The lens is fine and so far has taken nice photos, although I won't be able to pixel peep until I get back to New Jersey.

The lens cap seems to be made out of a very fragile plastic, anyone know how I may go about getting a replacement of such a specialty type of cap - obviously very custom made for the lens.

I'll let you know how the shots turn out (on a 5DII).

Re: focus confirmation chip for Samyang 14?

I agree with you!

Samyang 14mm is awesome for it´s price. It is really sharp and with 14mm there is actually no need to focus or use af, because the hyperfocal distance is so near, with f5.6 only 1.17m. So you need only set the focus scale to 2-3m and shoot. I dont´t own Canon 16-35, but owned 17-40 which I changed to Zeiss 21mm ze distagon. Zeiss is in my opinion best wa for Canon, but Samyang can be compared even with it.
here some tes photos taken with 21mm distagon and Samyang 14mm:
