Hello all,

just bought a DP1s

my aim is to use it for landscape photography, so, I don't mind if it is said to be "slow", just want to enjoy its IQ compared to my other DSLRs (4/3)
[& can't wait to get it !]

have 3 concerns though :
  • french & anglo-saxon sites differ on this point... : does the DP1s have 50 ISO capability, like the DP1 ? (very important for me)... think it is in the firmware, anyway
  • is the IQ "poorer", compared to DP1x (true II) ?
  • I suppose I'll be able to download Sigma Photo Pro's last version (4) ?
thank you in advance for any answer, cheers,

Hi alérion,

Can't speak to the ISO 50. It should be an 'extended' setting, if it's available. I actually think that the difference between 50 and 100 is not so important. If you use 50, make sure that you don't blow highlights (tough to recover).

The DP1x isn't out yet. The True II processor will likely make the images 'different', if not better. There's a noticeable change in quality from the SD14 (custom image pipeline) to the SD15 (True II, AFE, etc.), but it hardly renders the SD14 unusable or obselete. I imagine that the DP1s will work fine for you.

And yes, SPP 4.1 will be available to download. You may also want a 3.5/3.2 version (depending on OS), as there's a much different handling of noise for B/W conversions.

Enjoy your new camera!

Jim

You can always over expose by 1 f/stop to get ISO 50 (might clip highlights) and pull the exposure 1 stop on the computer. This is what most cameras do internally for "Expanded" ISO 50.

Don't know, I just ordered the DP1S too. :)

Yes, I downloaded it and also some sample RAW files from a review site and made sure I liked it.

There is no ISO 50, and manual states just 100/200/400/800. From my experience so far, in bright desert sun, 100 works well as the lower end.

Yes the DP1s has the ISO 50 option!

double checked the ISO 50 for the DP1s as I just turned it on. Started to have a little doubt after rereading Patric C answer....Just purchased and started using the DP1s...Have been working with the DP2 since december 2009 and yes it's a BIG difference with the DP1s not having the the TRUE II, to be frank it sucks, so you got to use it on its own term...but once you have experienced the TrueII. it-s hard to digest, but I will try to work with it, as the lens is fantastic and the charm of the camera is great to, limitation making the master....the DP2 is more user friendly, but one can get used fast to the DP1s....You can download the userguide/manual from SIGMA japan.

Software SPP always free available to all users and can be downloaded through Sigma sites, saw that SIGMA Japan also has an older version of the SPP available...

For landscapes it's just the thing to have....I took over the camera from a friend of mine who want to buy the Sigma SD 15...consider though to sell my DP1s, including voigtlanderviewfinder, filters, macro, grip, hoods etc as the TRUE !! is what I got used to and like. With both DP'S in your pockets is just eyecatching fantastic...the perfect hunt.
Sigma offers the best....

Just double checked my DP-1 (original). It has ISO 50 setting. I recall this came in one of the firmware upgrades. So the manual that was printed before the upgrade doesn't mention it. But as some others have said, it's really an extended ISO, it just overexposes by stop so you lose headroom on highlights.

thank you very much, zerotator;

DP1s is a first step in foveon world; I bet it will be great for landscapes... Glad 50 ISO is available - TRUE II's absence justifies the very low price (279 €) of the DP1s... I may upgrade to SD15 sooner or later :)

cheers,
