My first Pentax 645D hands-on image (Full-size image link included!)

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I last posted here. I've been extremely busy with work and family for the past few months so I haven't been taking pictures as much as I had wanted to. In fact today I was on a business trip in Shanghai and will stay the whole weekend here. But I was privileged to participate a Pentax 645D unboxing/hands-on party here in Shanghai during which two brand-new 645Ds that were just brought back from Japan were opened and used for the first time.

The weather is not good so we spent most of the time inside a restaurant and here's a portrait I took with the 645D and the DFA55/2.8 standard lens. I shot in DNG RAW and converted using Adobe Lightroom 3 with only slight WB adjustment, all other settings including sharpening were left untouched. Here's the resulting JPEG file I uploaded to flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/peter_fang/4734574113/sizes/o/in/photostream/

Beware: it's 16.5MB at 7264x5440. Just to give you a glimpse of what the 645D can do. ISO 200, f/3.5, 1/100s, handheld.

Note: The 645Ds we used today were not mine. I have to resist the temptation and starting today it will be a tougher thing to do...

More to come,

Peter

I'm no expert but that is a bit extreme, what's happened to your friends lens coating!

Nice skin pores but his glasses could use some cleaning Oh exceptional resolution but I think Lightroom introduced some magenta cast. Very very nice for an unprocessed portrait.

Please repeat after me....

"I don't have the budget for the 645 system" LOL!

Until recently I thought I will never consider a MF system, but I am slowly changing my mind. Shooting landscapes with that resolution and IQ... Mmmmm

Please stop posting those pics...

All the best, Jerome

Thank's for sharing Pete. All I can say is wow! The camera is sharp at the pixel level and it is 40 MP, and at f/3.5!!! Benefit of a large sensor I suppose.

It's going to take a while as I heard they've stopped accepting new orders in Japan until end of August due to unexpected high demand.

Re: My first Pentax 645D hands-on image (Full-size image link included!)

Indeed. Resolving details at the pixel level seems to be a piece of cake for the 645D.

Redefining

.

I've downloaded and cropped the heck out of that image, and it's quite extraordinary. What it reminds me of is some of the Arca-Swiss film portraits printed huge that I've seen - the detail just doesn't stop.

Similar to some other landscapes and nature shots I've downloaded from the 645d...

Why does 10 grand all of a sudden seem 'affordable'?
