IFPO Membership/Press Credentials any use?

I keep seeing this ad for IFPO ( http://www.ifpo.net ), lifetime
membership only $39.

Once you become a member, you can get press photographer
credentials for an additional $99.

Is this of any use?

Does this kind of a press pass allow access to places and events not
normally accessed by the public?

My main goal would be to not be restricted as to where I take my
photos from, especially during public events. Will the police/security
give you more access with a press pass?

Can I get in early and stay late at museums/parks etc?

Any experiences/comments appreciated.

I'm no expert, but sounds pretty sketchy to me...

gotta love this page:
http://www.ifpo.net/tp/frontlines.html

(especially the "THIS PAGE WILL BE UP BY JULY 15, 1998" part...)

Not very likely on any of those counts. You could probably make one with your own printer that would give you the same respect.

I have a press pass and it certainly doesn't give access to everything. I am allowed into press functions (pro sports, media events, etc) but that is due to having a legitimate pass - if they don't recognize it they probably won't recognize you. Serious events usually require a letter on newspaper letterhead from the editor.

I would urge you not to attempt this unless you truly have plans to use it for photojournalism purposes (freelance or otherwise). This type of thing makes it much harder for those with legitimate press cards.

Sincerely,

I read an article about this a couple of years ago. I don't remember all of it, but essentially this kind of "Press Card" is pretty meaningless, and something of a joke amongst real members of the Press. While there are valid organizations that offer such cards, most of what you may find on the Internet is highly questionable. I remember reading that one company offered a disclaimer stating that while it is perfectly legal for them to sell you a card, it may not be legal for you to use it.(!) At the very least I would think that a reputable merchant should ask for some sort of proof that you do indeed work for some newspaper or publication.

Search this forum. There was a lengthy discussion several months ago about how worthless IFPO credentials are. It sounds like a scam to me.

OK, I guess I not going to bite.

I am surprised, I have been seeing their ad in PopPhoto for ever!

I will have to go talk to my local newspaper......

Thanks,

I am a member of IFPO. I has worked for me. They send you passes along with a master copy of a press credentiall letter that you make copies and mail to editors. It has gotten me season photo passes to the Washington Redskins, passes to short Syracuse Orange Men, New England Patriots back in 1998. Some organizations won't honor it. I have been told know by the Buffalo Bills, and a couple of concert venues. So its 50 - 50.
