Kingfisher...w/- 300mm f.4 afs and TC20E III

The light condtion was really bad so I need to boost the ISO and use very low shutter speed....

Those look great - lots of detail in the feathers and everything. The TC 2.0 III appears to be a winner.

Great shots

The details are awesome. Seems to be a pretty good combo.

But how close to the bird have you been ?

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Great shots

Tony those are great shots as usual but why would you download such large images. You make it difficult for some folk to enjoy your images??

Tony - Superb !

Very well-taken shots.

The TCIII may be a nice piece of glass, but good technique helps !

These are enough to make a grown man cry . . .

Lovely images Tony!

Now you have had the TCIII for a while how do you sum it up?

Your earlier post of Kingfishers with the TCII contains images with superb detail too so I don't think the new TC is all about being sharper, do you? What I am seeing with the new TC on my 300mm is far better colour rendition, I guess due to better contrast - would be very interested in your summary of the TCIII.

PS I am still having probs with it on my 600mm, but that is another story!

How is the AF speed? I use the AF-S 300 4 with TC17 and I find that the AF is quite slow.

Thank you!

Fantastic captures! What body are you using, and pls. tell us the your technic as well. an effectiv 600/900mm is quite difficult to keep still and get tack-sharp pics at 1/125 !

Ah crud! Those have excellent detail with the new TC and the best samples I've seen yet. How was focusing? Have you tried BIF, if so hows tracking acquisition and lock?

Other than some neatimage they look great congrats!

Very sharp, can't believe those are with the latest TCll, still using your D90?

Looks like it, the EXIF info lists D90 as the camera used.

Re: Kingfisher...w/- 300mm f.4 afs and TC20E III

Thanks for posting, great images, did you have to set up a hide or was the 600mm enough so you did not need to?

I've be tempted to get the 300mm as there seems to be 80-400mm replacement coming soon, but there are two things that concern me, the lack of VR and comments about the tripod collar not being the best. How do you feel about those two points, you don't seem to be troubled by this, as you are getting sharp shots at 600mm and 1/125th?

It looks almost as if ..

.. you were poking him with the lens ;), was it really that close?
Looking good though, very.

Super nice shots but in fairness to the old TC20E II.....

I still feel the key to getting decent shots with any 2x TC is to remove as much distance between the subject and the camera. The TC20E II on my 500/4 performs equally well on close in static shots such as this, at least from what I see and compare from web images. The biggest shortcoming of the TC20E II I see is how it dramatically slows AF speed down enough to make tracking BIF shooting hit or miss.

While I think your Kingfisher pics are really nice and have decent detail, they are of a subject extremely close in (which is always ideal) and minimises atmospheric distortions and camera shake affect. I'm wondering if this was shot in captivity? I'm pretty confident you would have had the same exact level of quality with the older TC.

The big test for me is seeing consistently good BIF pics from this new TC. Of course, if I feel an improvement in AF speed and tracking I will be very happy.

Here's a handheld shot on a gloomy day at 1,000mm, ISO 2,800, D3, 500/4, TC20E II.
