K-x buffer size?

It seems that the Pentax K-x buffer only holds three pictures. At least it stops after three when in Continuous mode. Can this really be true?

Re: K-x buffer size?

Yes, the K-x buffer size is small compared to the competition. especially the K-7.

You may resolve the problem of continuous shooting (Hi) by:

  • using a fast card (class 10, 30Mb/s), and

  • selecting a JPEG file type that has a file size less than about 6 Mb for a class 10 card (6 Mb times 5 fps equals 30 Mb/s).

The above allows you to write up quickly to the card and minimise the use of the buffer.

Off course you must ensure that you switched off all post-processing, especially the lens correction. These are time-consuming and do dlow down considerable the frame rate in continuous shooting. Also put auto-focus (AF) on AF-S or manual. (Do not use AF-C.)

I have a K-7 and I tested the continuous shooting with a class 10 card and 6Mp files (quality 3 stars). I had no problem to record continous sequence in excess of 30 s at 5 fps.

Make sure the lens correction features are turned off ... I just tried them for the first time, and found my continuous shooting hits a big pause after the first 3 exposures. I also noticed no instant review after an exposure. Most likely some lag in the CPU removing the distortions from the image.

To verify, I switched it off and was able to shoot right up to 16 or so shots rapidly

yes, buffer size is small and this is somehow an antagonism when you consider the extemely high frame rate. my old k20 is just the other way around, it has a smaller frame rate but larger buffer. if you have both cameras, they match pretty neat.

if you want to catch a burst of action you have 2 different ways to go...

Re: K-x buffer size?

Yep! You guys were right, it was indeed the lens correction features. As soon as I turned them off, it got right on the fast track, many more frames than I need!
Amazing too with almost 5fps in such a small camera.

And since I mainly use the wonderful 70mm 2.4 lens, I doubt the lens correction features are much needed anyway.
