Paypal ya just lost me!

Not when you have 220 plus positive transaction and only one negative, from some jerk, and have been a customer for 8 years.

I also called them and it was very confusing and the floor manager couldn't really answer my questions. They were basically saying it didn't affect me , but then they weren't sure,. I tke pride in my feedback and look at it when looking at others. Paypal does me no favor here and since you work for ebay and I have called about this several times. Ebay's template for photo lenses is terrible, liked it better 3-4 years ago.---ron s.
It is triggered by

1. Feedback- if you have less than 100 feedback, then there is a hold

2. Feedback received for the txn- if a positive feedback is received, then the funds are released

3. If you provide a tracking number on paypal and the tracking shows that the item is released, then your funds are released.

Think about it this way- what would you do, if you are a buyer and someone scams you out of your $'s? You would complain to PP- then PP has to retreieve the funds somehow and pay you. This would have to be from the seller. If it is somehow not possible to do so, then PP has to pay you themselves. It is not possible for them to do that. All of you complaining are sellers but what would happen if you are a buyer who is scammed.

I understand the frustration but do think about why they are doing it :)

When they slapped the hold on me, my feedback was perfect - as it was when I canceled my account. Paypal posts a large number of rules, which it fails to follow. Basically, they attempted to hang onto my money because they thought they could browbeat me into accepting it. When I fought back vigorously they caved and shipped the funds.

I had well over 100 when they with-held 2 monies. One released when I pointed out that the buyer had already left feedback, the other released when I contacted the buyer and asked them to leave feedback and contact paypal. What would've happened if I couldn't have intervened?

I'm thinking of closing my account especially as the cut ebay/paypal takes means it's probably not worth selling stuff. Who wants to buy my 14-24?

There's lots of people who feel the same way, that's why things like this cartoon pop up:

I opened a Paypal account around 18-24 months ago and immediately received "hits" from outside the US trying to access my account. I had to change all my credit cards and immediately tried to cancel the Paypal account.

Nevertheless I keep getting email messages approximately every few months like the one copied below (received today):

Hello,

We recently noticed more attempts to log in to your PayPal account from a foreign IP address.

If you accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in attempts may have been initiated by you.

However, if you are the rightful holder of the account, please visit Paypal as soon as possible to verify your identity:

...yeah, paypal lost me about a year ago. Sold an item for six hundred bucks, guy didn't want insurance (I have in writing), had the reshipping receipt - guy won and they gave him his money back. Unfortuneatly for them I had a paypal credit thingie and owded them $1700 at the time - didn't pay them - when they called for payment I told them the situation and if they wanted to take it to court, I would be happy too ...never heard from them again. Not the way to do business.

Did this incident mess up your credit score?

I sold a lens to a fellow who did not want insurance. Got a tracking number from the Postal Annex I used to ship USPS Express International. The lens never showed up. Even though I had a tracking number, PayPal hit ME for the lost lens. Insurance is not to protect the buyer. It protects the seller. I will NEVER ship uninsured again.

If Paypal was concerned about the buyer in that case, they would be holding funds paid to sellers who have some number less than 100% in customer satisfaction, not just total transactions. Sellers with many hundreds or a even thousand transactions, but a 90% satisfaction level get their funds immediately, even though they might get dozens of bad ratings on a regular basis. At the same time, an occasional seller with less than 100 transactions but 100% perfect ratings gets their money held up?

At the same time, a buyer with little or no history can purchase a $1,000 lens from you, claim the never received it even though it was signed for (hey man not my signature), and paypal will take the money from you and refund them, and you the seller have to jump through hoops to get an insurance claim paid. If paypal's motive was to defeat fraud, they would not give the funds back to the buyer until the claim has been investigated and settled.

This is all about paypal holding as much money as possible as long as possible to earn some interest. No different from companies that wait until the last possible minute to pay their bills.

I am not a fan of PayPal either but those emails are called fishing, is has nothing to do with a PayPal account the scammers assume you have one and try to get you to use the link they provide and enter your name/password.

I get them on the email my earthlink and yahoo accounts but neither one of these have ever been used for my PayPal... I also get a tone of Bank of America fishing emails and I have never had an account.

NEVER use a link in an email regarding accounts EVER!

Thank you Raymond. I really had not considered that possibility...but either way, I never respond to these and I certainly never give out any financial or personal info out on anything other than known (and verified0 sources.

But good point and thank you.

Despise PayPal and have no bad dealings with them. It started about 5 years ago, I smelled something that didn't smell good to me, and decided that that there was little reward in trusting them to handle transactions for me. I ordered some coffee several months ago and at checkout was directed to PayPal...I cancelled the order. It's the old "risk vs reward" formula.

I just had another Paypal problem. I sold a 14mm to a guy in Germany (It was a UK-only auction by the way, so why ebay let him bid is .....I digress). They tried to deliver it but he was out so the parcel was left at a postoffice somewhere. They didn't leave a card at his house. I had proof of postage. I had a tracking number. All parties could tell it was being held at a post office in Germany. It seems the German guy couldn't track the lens down so he starts a dispute through Ebay. Paypal deducts £600 from my paypal account (leaving it in -ve balance which paypal point out I'm not allowed to have so I must transfer funds into the account - Yeh! Right! And maybe you'd like to sleep with my wife?). So I'm left trying to find the parcel in a different country before the the German guy goes on holiday!!! Luckily I found it, informed the German where to find it, he picked it up and dropped the dispute and Paypal restored my balance.

It just shows you how you can do everything right but still run the risk of losing alot if your bank account is linked to you Paypal account.

What annoyed me was how quickly Paypal assume the seller is in the wrong and deduct the funds before any investigation. Suppose I had gone overdrawn and had incurred bank costs? How long would it have taken me to get that from Paypal?
I'd advise everyone to remove any link to paypal from their accounts.
Pete

That sounds like a fishy story to me. If someone bids from outside your area, if you choose not to ship to that area, you can cancel the bid.

FYI, have dealt with Paypal fraud and having been a "Grey-Hat - for sport" - Paypal is fastly becoming the worst way to do transactions online - your money has no real value ones it becomes depostied and theres no defense for either side of the transaction.

Beware.

PM me for a recently released PDF about the ways of safe-guarding your existing PayPal account as well as preventing problems in the future. Written by a Paypal insider. =)

Recieved an email from Paypal today that basically said--"Unfortunately, due to a technical issue, we mistakenly sent you and email explaining that your account was subject to payment holds. Rest assured issue has been corrected and we apologize"-----------well, I guess that is better than not hearing from them :-P.

I have to say I'm quite a bit more leary of using ebay now and will try and do most of my selling/trading on the Nikonians or FM sites------or I could just shoot more and buy less :-} --ron s.

AMEX still offers one of the best "cash back" policies with 3% on gas, 2% on groceries, travel, and dining and 1% on everything else. At least, that is my impression from reading the fine print. So, you should keep them.

AMEX--stopped doing business with them, never had a balance to speak of, and used it a lot--then discovered that they would mail out invoice on "let's say" the 21st(I said mail on the 21st) and then it was due on the 10th--this was a shabby play to penalize--they did this twice(and I kept envelopes, statement dates etc) . They were gone, along with the ones(other cards) that came back with a "golly we are raising your interest to 24%" pretty strange behavior for honest organizations.

I don't have a CC balance and always paid everything off within 60 days, at the os------strange behavior indeed.
Do you know what is in your wallet????????? ---ron s.
