SD15 release date rumor

Yet another SD15 release date rumor, which comes with the standard "I can't name the source" proviso (other than to say the source is very reliable.)

Anyway, for what it's worth: "We expect the SD15 to be released near the end of February, 2010, though that date may be a bit optimistic."

Happy Holidays.

Well, I reckon Chuck it's more like to have escaped than have been released if that date materialises!

Re: SD15 release date rumor

Hi Chuck, thanks for posting.

Your own post clearly identified this as rumour etc. I agree.

From my recall of previous camera releases, particularly the SD14, I remember plenty of such rumours before and they were pretty much all wrong.

I would expect Sigma to announce final specs and shipping dates some time before it actually starts to ship. Like, months before. So, given that we've had no official announcement, the safest bet would be that it's several months away.

This is just my opinion of course.

Re: SD15 release date rumor

I believe the release date, right before the holiday I'll hopefully be taking. So there's no chance I'll be able to afford it.
Knowing my luck it'll be the perfect camera for my holiday too.

It would make sense as their recent DPx releases have also been in the Feb.-Mar. timeframe.

SIGMA's brand director Shinzo Fukui, known as Gris who took the official sample photos for the DP2, is now in Bali for a "photography tour."

It is quite reasonable to imagine he is taking photos with the new SD15 for the official sample, if the release date will be the end of February.

Re: SD15 release date rumor

Without to be a great astrologist, it is obvious there is a great probability to see SD15 released a 21st of February or Spetember, because these dates are the opening days of respectively PMA and Photokina.

I am quite sure that Sigma would use PMA opening to launch SD15, because next Photokina is really late and Sigma Staff can not let wait this camera more longer !

Have a merry Xmas !

LOL I went to Sigma Corp in Korea at the Sae Ki Building and asked the guy and he said hopefully soon (this is a store that has the service contract not like Sigma Corp in Japan unfortunately)

I really want to use the SD15...

Too little too late for me...

Already jumped earlier this month to a Nikon D700--very impressive piece of kit. Am in two minds whether to keep my DP1 or not.

Will be nice to see what Sigma come out with eventually though.

Re: SD15 release date rumor

It's funny because I noticed him tweeting something to the effect of admiring the TRUE2's processing ability with the hash tag #dp2 and #foveon. I then replied asking him if there was a camera other than the DP2 using the TRUE2, and he answered, "I can't say anything about that."

I'm very much looking forward to PMA.

Hi, It will probably be before long, I just hope it will be competitive enough or a big enough upgrade so people will become customers.

It's no longer worth waiting for

based on real world experience (of myself and what's heard from others) with DP's which share the same processing engine with the SD15, and that the processor is the only confirmed major upgrade to SD15.

Expect no more than a SD14s, (like DP1s to DP1). A worthy upgrade, though, from SD10 or before and, of course, any Bayer sensor camera, hehe.

Re: SD15 release date rumor

The following information comes from Mr. maro's blog entry.

The Sigma User Group in Japan had their annual end of year get together with some Sigma employees (they always invite somebody from Sigma), and managed to squeeze out the following information regarding the SD15:

  • the same Foveon sensor is going to be used, but the other components are being revised

  • they are thoroughly looking into anything that has room for improvement, so that's why they cannot announce any release dates

  • better firmware, faster FPS, faster speed (unknown if this is referring to the general operation or buffer)

  • Sigma is apparently aiming the SD15 to be above the mid-range Nikons and Canons

The bottom line is that the SD15 will look like the mock up, but will be a different camera inside.

Cheers.

OK - nothing new there

  • they are thoroughly looking into anything that has room for improvement, so that's why they cannot announce any release dates

OK - might mean anything

  • better firmware, faster FPS, faster speed (unknown if this is referring to the general operation or buffer)

OK - sounds reasonable

  • Sigma is apparently aiming the SD15 to be above the mid-range Nikons and Canons

Hmmmm ... how did you come to this conclusion? The mid range Nikons and Canons are way above SD14 in many respects. The words from Sigma could mean that. But ... the DP2 should also have been a substantial improvement over DP1 ... and it was an improvement ... but not all that breathtaking.

It wont. We more or less know what it is going to be. And that was not competitive even when SD14 was released. It will be a camera for the Foveon enthusiasts only. And the number of Foveon enthusiasts that are willing to get yet another SD camera are probably very low.

And ... moreover ... if you read this forum then you get the impression that those few that are going to get a DP1s or SD15 are waiting until they can get it for €200 on eBay. A strategy that gives zero money to Sigma.

I make the prediction the SD15 will be a loss for Sigma.

Apologies for my unclear post, I'm just reposting Mr. maro's points that he gathered from the Sigma employees at the get together.

All the points about the improvements, delayed shipping time and their aim to surpass mid-range Nikons/Canons are not my conclusions nor Mr. maro's, they were apparently mentioned by Sigma's employees.

The initial specs that Sigma announced at Photokina 2008 and PMA 2009 were improvements over the SD14. My understanding of the "new improvements" that were mentioned during the get together are improvements over those initial SD15 specs.

So the unannounced improvements that Sigma is looking into could make the SD15 rise to the same level as mid-range Nikons/Canons or surpass them as Sigma is apparently aiming to do.

Cheers.

Thank you for passing on the information you gathered, ttaiyo. It really helps us to understand what Sigma has in mind. As I have said before; Sigma does listen to its users.
