1Ds Mark II - Is It the Time to Replace the Shutter?

I bought a used 1Ds Mark II recently, the total shutter count reported from both the 1DCount and PS EXIF Info is 29,150.

Everything else works fine but I found when using the main shutter button I often got double shots even under "One-Shot" mode, also, there were many times that the shutter didn't react when I fully pressed down the main shutter button. I tried the shutter button on the vertical grip, it's working fine, no double shots, and shutter acted as expected every time.

Any 1Ds II user got the same problem? I'm wondering, if I send the camera to Canon for repair, what the cost would be? Do I need to replace the whole shutter component or just the main shutter button?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Based on your troubleshooting report, I'd say it is the shutter button. If one shutter button works and the other doesn't, it probably isn't the shutter. The cost to take that camera apart is not cheap. That $10 button assembly will probably cost about $180US. Maybe a little more.

Contact Canon and set up a repair authorization. They will not quote you a price until they have the camera in hand. If you've never sent anything into them before, it feels like you're sending your camera into a black hole. You won't hear anything from them after the quote and your authorization to make the repair until the camera is repaired. It takes a minimum of 14 business days, which is more like 22 days from the time you send it in. People in the pro club get faster service.

Thanks Schwany!

I guess it's the main shutter button because the other shutter button works fine without any problem.

If it would cost me $180 for replacing the shutter button alone, would it be a good idea to just replace the whole shutter component? I read from the forum that it's around $270 or so to replace the 1Ds II shutter.

Sure, I wasn't looking at it from that angle, but that is a better idea. It's always reassuring to have a new shutter assembly.

Hey dude,

Try cleaning the lens contacts. I had a 1D body that I took to little island for about 3 weeks. The salt in the air caused a lot of wear and tear and it would exhibit some of those symptoms.

After a thorough cleaning, everything was back working normally.

Thanks dayala!

Yes I did clean the lens contacts on the camera and tried several lenses, the problem still exists, I guess the main shutter button has reached the end of its life.

send it to cfs ask them they will quote you before fixing and I have had nothing but fantastic service and advice from them, ask them if the shutter needs replacing and also the button is pretty much guaranteed the culprit, trust canon they really are not in the habit of suggesting to replace something that needs not be replaced. if nothing else have a check and clean done, that may be it.

2nd owner. I have to agree with the shouldn't be happening statement. I wonder if studio cameras are the ones that keep on ticking to the unbelievable shutter actuation numbers I've seen quoted, like 300,000. Then again, it could just be pure luck of the draw if one makes it to the 200,000 mark.

Having had a 40D that died at 12K shutter actuations, I have been properly programmed not to expect that my 1Ds2 will get to 200,000. 50,000 would make me happy. I have been assimilated. ;-)
I've been lucky enough not to have any problems myself, but it does concern me how often I hear of shutter related faults on the 1DsII even after relatively little use. These problems just shouldn't be happening with a professional camera like this.

My 1D is at 60k shots, and my 1Ds2 is at 38k shots. Both are still working like champs, and I'm not nervous at all about the shutter. If I'm on an important shoot I'll bring at least 2 bodies, so there's practically no chance for catastrophic failure.

I lost a used 1dsmk2 at 24k actuations and a new one at 4k actuations never lost any with my 1dmk2 1dmk3 5d or any other camera somethings up there, and when they went they went in a big way, blew apart.
