Panorama thread: December 2009 *large files*

Hi all,

Thanks to all who participated in last month's thread. It seemed to go
a little slow at times, but that's the time of year, I guess.
If you have a free moment, look through the complete November edition
and you will see that there are some real treasures there, nevertheless!

And now it is December. Last month of the year 2009. I can hardly believe
it yet, things have gone so fast this year.
Happy Holidays to you all, and let's make this edition a good one!

So, once again, if you have panoramas that you would like to
share, feel free to add them here.

They may have been taken at any time, and with any camera.

Please do not forget to mention the location of your images.

Have a very festive month of December, everybody!

André

PS
Happy Sinterklaas to the folks in the Benelux!

Sunet over the Necropolis

Taken today, Glasgow Necropolis. Bracketed and enfused spherical pano, remapped to Miller cylindrical, cropped top and bottom.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Hamada...

That is a nice view. I like landscape panos -- to get a glimpse of someone else's world world. Is this in the vicinity of Mount Aso?

I thought you lived in Hamamatsu (Shizuoka), but now... I realize you are on Kyushu! Either way, both are home to HONDA motorcycles.

Yesterday's Crop of Six...

It was the first of the month...

And I had a couple of business meetings...

And it was a nice day...

And I had the camera with me...

And I was also thinking... "Hey! There's a new pano thread is coming-up soon!"

So, to fulfill my forum duty, here are six panos taken yesterday. Nothing spectacular, just some views around Seattle on a sunny December day!

c. 11:30 -- My typical view near Terminal 5 in Seattle. 6 frames. Small size (since I have posted too many ship panos in the past). But I am working a project nearby, so I am in the area and cannot resist. I like the color coordination of the ship and the cranes...

c. 12:00 -- I had some extra time, so I headed downtown to Pier 62 for a view of the Olympic mountains (looking west). 6 frames. 655 KB...

c. 12:10 -- I moved down the pier and turned the camera for a pano along Alaskan Way (looking west, north and east). You can see the Olympic Mountains on the left. 16 frames. 1.2 MB...

c. 15:30 -- I had a meeting in Lake Stevens at 1:30 PM (13:30)... so after the meeting I drove around the lake and found a public park (Wyatt Park). This view is looking east toward the Cascade mountains (Mt. Pilchuck). 5 frames. 868 KB...

c. 17:30 -- Back near my home... this view is looking east toward the Cascade mountains... Bellevue... Mercer Island (floating bridge)... from the I-90 tunnel portal in Seattle. Scroll to far right and you will see Mt. Rainier. 16 frames. 1.4 MB...

c. 20:00 -- After dinner, I took my wife for a short drive to Kerry Park and set-up the tripod for a night-time city pano. 16 frames. 681 KB...

Loved all of them, but especially the night shot pano. You should sell that one!

Re: Yesterday's Crop of Six...

Those are some really excellent sharp pano's. On the third one, it looks sharp from near foreground to infinity. How were you able to acheave that? Did you re-focus for the foreground frames? Also, do you sharpen before and after stitching? What settings & software do you use for sharpning?
Thanks,
Art

LynneG...

Thank-you for the nice comment. I don;t think you can sell these -- because there are probably oodles of shots like this (it is a popular spot and easy to get to). ANyway, here's a single shot from the same location (I might have moved the tripod a few feet):

Art...

Thanks for the look and the comments. Panos (like some regular single frame shots) are kind of strange in that sometimes things just work out better than others. You can try real hard to get it a certain way (and it doesn't always happen) and then at other times you are surprised by the result.

Pretty-much 98% of the time I shoot single-row panos. I do NOT sharpen in post. I shoot with the Nikkor 12-24, 18-200, 17-55 and 70-200. All these that you see here are single row. For #3 -- yes, I too was a bit surprised by the crispness. It was shot with the 17-55... but so was #2 -- and overall #2 seems a little soft to my eyes (the distant hills maybe?). But the ships anchored in the bay and the docks/piers to the right seem OK. Anyway, for #3, the individual frames (again, single row) were shot at 23mm (34mm equiv.), f/11, 1/500th. ISO 200 (the D300's default ISO). I noticed I had a water spot on the lens -- after I was looking at the images on the screen. Oh well.

I typically stitch with PTGui. Sometimes I use Microsoft ICE (free) if PTGui is having a hard time coming-up with a result (not too often). ICE is free and it is actually pretty good for a free piece of software. I save the stitch at the largest size possible. Then I tweak slightly in PSE v4 (levels, shadows/highlights, contrast). I try not to overcook -- keep it "real" and when I am done I make a copy of the stitch. Taking the copy, I reduce the size (pixel dimensions) down to anywhere from 25% to 50% of original. I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager for this (easy to do, the program comes with Windows; it is my default JPEG viewer). After that, I simply open the image with "Paint" (the Windows program that has been around forever) and save it -- that's it. This puts a considerable amount of JPEG compression on the file with only very slight (very slight) image degradation. Hardly noticeable. IQ penalty is negligable. But the file size reduction (bytes) is immense. In the end, an original stitch that was anywhere from 25 MB to 100 MB has been reduced to something that is a good size to view on-screen/web -- relatively large (which is the whole point of a pano, right?) but no too big where it becomes a bandwidth hog. The final pano file size is anywhere from 259 KB to roughly 1.5 MB. Not too hard to digest.

That is a nice one Daniel. The bracketing really gives it a lot of depth. Kind of a spooky scene?

1971_M5-san Yes you are right.

Is this in the vicinity of Mount Aso?

Shooting point is below from a viewing place along winding road filled with a lot of motor cyclist on holiday.

Yes, Andre...

It was fun. Still, I have not yet figured out a way to make enough time to do this RIGHT -- in a slow and relaxed manner! Seems like I am always squeezing-in photo-taking and panos amongst all the other daily activities. I'm the NASCAR "pit crew" of pano takers. I can set 'em up and snap 'em in a hurry. But yes, it was enjoyable and a nice sunny day.

From December 2008

Part of Gouda's festivities last year was another visit by the French
artist Patrice Warrener.
He illuminates buildings all over the world with his special beamer
projectors. Our 15th century town hall is a great subject for his artform:

See the complete gallery here:

http://mcpint.zenfolio.com/p885617423

I heard that Mr Warrener is not coming this year, which is a pity.
Whatever they have planned, I'm sure it won't be as spectacular
as this display! Will keep you informed.

Cheers,

André
