Hi,

As probable many, i'm waiting for my d3S.

I like to know from people who will use it for video and want to purchase an external microphone for it, which one they like to buy or can advice to use?

I will use the video functionality probable only sporadic, don't plan to spend hundreds of Euros on an external microphone.

i too also won't use the video mode hardly at all. it's great that they are including it, but people are starting to forget. It is a still image camera first, then a video camera. i get upset when I walk into a best buy and the customers will ask, "which of these cameras will do HD video?"

I always say, if you are looking into a dslr strictly for hd video, you're buying it for the wrong reason.

Spare him the lecture perhaps?

Hi Jospeh,

If I ever will use it for my work, it should be able to record sound during a press event or large gathering. For the rest it will be sometimes for private usage.

I don't feel the need for 1080 for my type of work, if there will be any serious.

Got the advice for the Senseiser,
I'll check Rode, thansk for the advice.

Michel
Rode makes some good mics. As it the camera will not provide phantom power your choices are somewhat limited.

I'll have this one tomorrow...available at Amazon for USD70. It's the Audiotechnica PRO 24-CM Stereo Condenser Microphone.

With a bandwidth of 11KHz stereo external input; anything more than a very cheap (read $30) would be a complete waste.

The number of PJs I know who have expensive wireless lav rigs are totally bewildered by Nikons reasons for 11KHz. They have to record seperately (most use something like a Zoom H4) and sync up in post, which is a new skill they have to acquire and it means access to a computer/laptop is mandatory and of course it eats time.

However, the Canon boys are just dropping their stuff off at the desk.

I´m working now with two D3s for about 10 weeks now, an the best mic I found was the Beyerdynamik MCE 86 S II Cam. It seems to be one of the standard mics for broadcasting.

Talking about the sampling rate, the results of this combination were absolutely usable for reportage and documentary stuff.

If you wanna have an ear on the quality:

For me it works quite well. If you´re going to work more professional, you take an external recording device such as a Zoom or the old beloved MD-Recorder.

Digital is wonderful, it´s fast an easy, but has anyone ever mentioned what fun and
pleasure it is to do color-positives?

After 6h in the darkroom, you´ll love your final result - more than you´d probably do
after 6h of PS´ing.
