Teleconverter for 70-200 2.8 VRII

My 70-200 2.8 VRII will be arriving on Monday (from Amazon). Does anybody have any advice or experience with a suitable telecoverter? I am considering a 1.4x Nikon or Tamron or the 1.7x Nikon.

There is NO question that the Nikon 1.4x IIE is the very best converter for this lens. On my "old" model 70-200 it is stellar.

I'm wondering the same thing and will pick up my 70=200 Monday too. While I would expect the 1.4 Nikon TC to be better than the 1.7 in theory, I wonder what the actually image quality impacts will be with this new lens. At over $400 each, I'm waiting before buying either TC until I see some test results.

I had the 1.4 and 2.0 with my old 70-200. Picked up my new VR II yesterday and traded my 2.0 fro the 1.7. I was never happy with the IQ of the 2.0.

1.4 would be the maximum I would use. many people like the 1.7 but I find it degrades the image too much.

1.4 doesn't give you as much reach... but keeps your image quality better.

Isn't the amount of image degradation due to a TC dependent on the specific lens design? I"m hoping the new 70-200 is more compatible with the 1.7 TC than the prior version. I'm waiting for someone to do a 1.4 vs 1.7 comparison test with the new lens.

Hi Arne,

I have my copy of the new lens since early november and made several tests with it, including tests with the Nikon TC17EII.

The results I get are surprisingly very good (including in the corners), even at wide apertures !

You can read my test review and view my sample-images (with and without the TC17EII) on my website here: http://www.geosolve.be/test_optiques.htm

Pol

Re: Teleconverter for 70-200 2.8 VRII

When I got the 1.7 Nikon TC to replace my Kenko 1.4 I was in heaven !! The Nikon is much better built and IQ of the Nikon 1.7 blew away the Kenko 1.4. Now that I allso have the Nikon 1.4 I hardly use the 1.7 on the 70-200 anymore.

When stopped down at least 1.5 to 2 stops, the 1.7 will give you very good results, but the Nikon 1.4 is just better. Even wide open.

Pol,

Thank you for taking the time to document your testing, the 1.7 results look excellent. Is your 70-200 a random sample from early production lenses?

The Nikon 1.4x IIE has been awesome on my 70-200 2.8 and my 200-400 f4 (used on D300.) The AF is lightning fast especially when on a tripod and VR has been turned off.

Thanks Lou, I am indeed very happy with the results I get !

My lens comes from the first "pre"-shipment that arrived in Europe end of October. Since 2 or 3 days now the lens is distributed almost everywhere through Europe.
So I "think" (?) I can say it was a random sample from early production...
