With price difference you can buy a nice 35MM 1.8 lens

That's the reason I got a D80 having a D40, to be able to AF lenses without having to pay extra $$$ for the AF-S versions.

Yes, but it costs more and focuses more slowly than the non-G version.

There are about 20 current Nikkors that will not AF with motorless bodies, as well as a tremendous number in the used market, making an in-body AF motor a must for many people.

I upgrade to D300s and the gadget mounted on the hotshoe is my Easytagger GPS.

One thing I can tell you is that the desire for features and perceived differences from D40 all through the Nikon prosumer range up to and including the D300S just released, are purely a product of marketing. As many will attest, the IQ througout the model range is virtually equal. The rest is only important to those who want specific features. IMO, Nikon and the other manufacturers have consumers on a hampster wheel, if you catch my meaning.
