Re: 1st hour with my new A550

Wow -- looks like really nice high ISO performance. Maybe I should go for an A550 myself? As a lightweight alternative to my A900 bodies!

Nice children too

Looks pretty good for 12800 ISO. Could you post some with HIGH NR too?

Hey I'm jealous... Looks pretty good. Care to share your first overall impressions in comparison to your other alpha bodies?

Re: 1st hour with my new A550

Have you any means to compare the performance of the A550 JPEG engine, with the former one from the A350 / 380

Re: 1st hour with my new A550

my 1st impression for this A550;
(I am A300 upgrade user)
fast response in AF & continuous shoot 5fps,
builtin flash can take 3fps photo(unlike A300 only take 1 per flash).
new LCD was big & bright.... very easy review picture....high density..

a bit over sensitivity when I half press release button, due to I set 5fps, to it just fire few shot without letting me know it...(just me slow man).

Re: 1st hour with my new A550

in comparing with A300 JPG.... you can easliy tell the difference without too much drill into it....
a lot better....

Re: 1st hour with my new A550

when you are in main sensor live view mode does the camera go into a standby mode if you're not using it? After how long?

thanks for the info james, it's really nice to see some hands on results from another forum poster.

from a quick look iso1600 on the A550 = iso400 on A350, ie about 2 stops improvement.

THAT is quite amazing...

Seeing the processed JPEGs at ISO12800 was very impressive, and shows some serious work by Sony to improve JPEG processing engines in their newest batch.

However, this is simply amazing...the NR off setting I'm sure still applies some form of noise reduction somewhere, but what you see here is quite nice looking even with the noise - the noise pattern is very fine, even the chroma, and the detail is still quite good. You can see where the camera doesn't have to work as hard to remove ugly chroma blotches, like the huge blue blobs that used to pop up at ISO3200 in the A300/350 series.

I would love to see a few sample shots if you don't mind where you really push the ISO6400 and ISO12800 in horrible underexposed conditions, both in original jpeg mode as well as RAW converted mode. Maybe something in a very very dark room, with tons of dark black shadow area...that's where all cameras will reveal any noise they're going to produce and struggle the most to smoothly remove the noise without compromising detail.

Thanks for the early samples...this camera has me quite excited.

Re: Which lens type are you using for these picture??

I use ZA 24-70 f2.8
I have it on A mode with F4 or F5.6
just simply change ISO .... let the shutter work out itself...

1st 1/200 ISO12800 F4
2nd 1/80 ISO12800 F4
3rd 1/20 ISO1600 F5.6
