18-55 IS Mod / Parts manual

I have a cheap 18-55 IS that I want to use on a 10D. I know you can mod the original non IS version to fit, but the IS version has 2 small sensors in the bayonet housing. I'm not sure if there is enough room between the sensors and the section of housing that needs grinding off.

Has anyone done this mod ?

Any idea what the sensors are for, ie can they be encased in epoxy ?

Is there a parts manual available. ?

The original mod can be seen here: http://metku.net/index.html?path=mods/efs/index_eng

Cheers

Re: 18-55 IS Mod / Parts manual

I modified my 18-55 IS specifically for use on my 10D. You can do the mod exactly like it is shown in the link you posted, although I am not clear on what two small AF sensors in the bayonet housing you're referring to, there was no problem grinding the housing down. I didn't do mine as neat as was done in the link posted but it works fine on my 10D and newer Rebel XS.

I did the mod for my 10D the exact same way as the link did. Used JB Weld instead. Worked like a champ, and it's still that way.

I also modded a 17-55 EFS lens, but on that one, all I did was remove the plastic ring off the back.

Re: 18-55 IS Mod / Parts manual

Thanks, I actually started the mod today. I'm glad I now know it will be ok !

As for the 2 sensors, I made up a couple of plastic stops and glued them in place first. The resin then just covers the remaining 2/3 of the area without interfering with the sensors which should be enough - (Didn't have any of the JBWeld, but plenty of araldite - flows nicely into the gaps)

Pic shows the inside of the bayonet fitting. The 2 sensors are attached to the ribbon connector which connects to the main housing.

I'll grind it back tomorrow when its completely cured and see what happens.

Re: 18-55 IS EFS Mod / Parts manual

Well for anyone that is interested - it works fine.

There was just enough room between the bottom of the sensors and the the section you have to grind - about 0.25mm left !

From the pics I have tried so far, the fact there is now a hole and the sensors show doesn't seem to be an issue. From what I have read, others have just hacked off the end without the use of resin and ended up with a big hole and no centre piece at all.

If your wandering why bother in the first place -

I have an Sea & Sea DX10D underwater case for the 10D with a standard port. The only other lens I have that will fit the port is a sigma 50mm macro and I really needed a wider lens.

The 18-55 should be perfect.

Re: 18-55 IS EFS Mod / Parts manual

Adam,

Congrats on completing the mod. The 18-55 IS is a pretty darn good lens for the money. I still use a my 10D a lot. It may be older but it is still produces excellent results if I do my part. Fitting the 18-55 IS to the 10D is a great match from my experience.

From the 1st pic I can't figure out what you have done ?

As for the 2nd, I don't remember seeing that extra piece of metal. Are you sure it isn't supposed to be in the main housing?
