Don't think he is joking. At least no indication thereof. (NT)

Actually, I'm not joking at all.

Helen just sent me a mail though clarifying: Adorama can't get them anymore, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're discontinued (whatever that means).

Take it for what it's worth.

"can't get them anymore" is a long way from "confirmed discontinued". There are a lot of lenses Adorama or anybody else don't have in stock at the moment. I don't know who this Helen chick is at Adorama but you're presenting it as if she's the Canon CEO herself.

I'm willing to bet you a copy of the 70-200 that you're wrong on your proclamation.

Actually, Helen was given the wrong information inadvertantly. The lens is not discontinued but currently on a heavy back order from Canon with no official ETA.
On behalf of Helen and myself, sorry for the confusion.

It sure would be nice if we could change the thread title at this point.

Little disappointed in learning it is not discontinued

Would have been fun speculating on an f2 version with 9 stop IS.

And with a 50-400 range, weighing 600 grams and selling for $300. Certainly that's what I was expecting as the replacement when I saw the header.

Why would you even want to spend $300 on vaporware? let it come for free

Re: Adorama confirms: Canon 70-200 2.8 IS is discontinued

a. Being "out of stock" is not the same thing as being "discontinued."

b. Being unable to get one now is not the same thing as being "discontinued."

c. Rather than paraphrasing in such a way as to suggest a silly situation, why don't you quote exactly what the Adorama person tol you?

Makes sense - Hybrid IS could be the new 70-200/2.8

This is the only plausible explanation for Canon to
have short supply of this highly popular and
high margin lens.

Time to sell the old 70-200/2.8 IS before
the prices plummet this winter!

I am positive they will try new IS with some EF-S lens first to get a real life feedback before pushing it into pro L-segment.

repalced by maybe a 70-300 f4 IS

With the new IS adding more IS stops, f2.8 isn't as needed so a stop slower, cheaper, smaller, and lighter than f2.8

According to my Getty sources...

I was talking with my Getty colleagues earlier this year at a sporting event and they were told by their Canon rep that a replacement for the 70-200 2.8L IS would be coming out within the year. They were not surprised by this because the 70-200 2.8L IS is generally their least favorite Canon zoom because it's so soft at f/2.8. The other Canon zoom they disliked was the 16-35 2.8L.

I also learned that the Getty photographers were given the option to switch to Nikon or stay with Canon, but that once they switched it would be for good. Many chose to switch, and others chose to continue using their MkIIn's until Canon comes out with a replacement for the MkIII.
