Wow! Fabulous shots. These are truly splendid captures.

I might be inclined to remake the posted versions however. There are some quite visible JPEG compression artifacts which obviously don't exist in your originals. It would be nice to see these wonderful images without that minor problem.

My guess would be 70 feet.... Just a wild stab, after reading the text

I'm all ears malch...

Whatever artifacts are present will be in all of my shots. Here's my std. workflow:
1. D2X modeIII, contrast -1, saturation +1, NR low, sharpening 3, aRGB.

2. In NX2 set NR to "better quality", white point at 250, black point at zero, save.

3. crop, fit photo to 865 wide, convert to sRGB, USM at 4,5,17, save as good quality jpeg.

Thanks for the workflow info -- I'm saving that for future reference

The JPEG compression is most visible around the subjects beak in #2; it's a kind of fuzzy/jaggy halo effect. It's not a sharpening thing at all, especially in the light of your very gentle USM, but I noticed it right away.

More on the top? I think it's a reflection...

Awesome shots Jim but....

can you really call it full frame when shot
with a DX camera?

I have this attitude since I got the D700

Re: This is reach...

Yep that's reach alright. If my wife wouldn't castrate me, I would get one of those 500s. For now, I am stuck with my 300f4 and 1.7.

Re: This is reach...

Yes, very nice reach! If Malch is worried about whatever he is seeing around the beak on the first image, that is very, very minor, and won't print.

I have enjoyed taking these images: http://www.pbase.com/jpower

That was my impression too.

Anway Jim, nice captures! I am so jealous, that lens seems awesome! I am planning on trying to save up for one now, before I get married. After that, I am quite sure I won't be allowed to buy it either.

Okay so far. But can the rest and substitute:

3. Smart Sharpen (or other sharpen) probably 150, .8 with your settings, but you'll have to experiment.
4. Bicubic downsize to 1750 wide.
5. Use the Sharpen (yes, the Sharpen) filter twice.
6. Bicubic downsize to 865 wide, convert to sRGB, save as good quality JPEG.

Yep, that's the entire frame of the D300...

I have this attitude since I got the D700

That explains it, the D700 of course has this supersized sensor that's larger than the normal sensor size. As a result, you'll have to deal with a 0.67 crop factor on all your lenses. A 500mm lens on the D700 is really just a 330mm lens...

This lens is 12 years old lofling...

I was told it was the first in North America, serial number 57. Too bad it took me 8 years to learn to use it.
