*Cataloging photos with ThumbsPlus*

Whew!! I'm finally done. I put off installing ThumbsPlus and cataloging my photos with keywords for too long...(2 1/2 years to long)...

I finally started doing it last Sunday and finished tonight...12 archived CDs full of photos...

No more guessing on which CD any favorite shots are on...I have categories such as family, kids, babys, animals, ducks, squirells, deer, barns, scenics, boats, cars, sunsets, rainbows, reflections, night, lights, people, music, friends, action, photoshop fun etc...the possibilties are endless...

Now that I'm done, I enter any keyword and the program brings up all the thumbnail size photos in that category and tells me which CD and folder the original is on...

Awesome! Anybody that's been thinking of doing this, do it sooner than later cause it is a big job to go back through all your photos...

Now that I'm current, I just have to keyword each new CD I archive...

SO much easier to be organized...especially now that cameras have higher megapixels, you'll be burning A LOT more CDs and having a harder time keeping track of your photos if you don't catalog them...

Now I can relax and go out tomorrow and shoot some more photos...

Can you share some more info about the program? (17) Looked at an E20 last night ... they mopped the drool off the floor after I left.

Re: *Cataloging photos with ThumbsPlus*

I've been using ThumbsPlus for almost 3 years (since I got my first digital camera) and I love it. One thing I especially like is the galleries feature. In addition to tagging photos with keywords, you can also add them to galleries. This still leaves them in their physical location on the disk, but is another way of categorizing your shots. You can view one of these galleries and see all of a particular kind of picture without even searching. I have sunsets, flowers, zoo animals, infrared, etc. You could use these galleries to create "compilation" CDs also (like one CD full of sunsets, etc.). Another thing that the latest version allows you to do is "tag" images, either from the thumbnail view, from a slideshow (which is really cool), and the tagged images will then be placed in a "Tagged" gallery. I find this is a good way to easily select images from my latest download to be resized, sharpened, and copied to some other location for web page creation.

There are actually a lot of neat features in this program (beyond file cataloging) and sometimes it takes a bit of digging or experimenting to find them.

One thing I have done is to create 2 thumbs plus databases -- one for the files that reside on my hard drive and a second for cataloging "off-line" CDs.

Looking forward to your next batch of photos!

Ergo,
Here's there web site...

http://www.cerious.com/thumbsplus.shtml

I was overwelmed at first by the size of the book that came with it but when I finally decided to give it a whirl I found it was very easy to use and figure out...

Thinking of the E-20 are you? I don't think you can go wrong with either E-10 or E-20...they just feel like a "real" camera...

Here is their web site: http://www.cerious.com

You can download a fully-functional evaluation (30-day I think) copy here:

http://www.cerious.com/download.shtml

I highly recommend it. I also use it sometimes for quick images adjustments like contrast, saturation, and I really like their "Unsharp Mask More" filter, which allows you to make a couple of adjustments to it. You can also create web pages (as good as Photoshop, but some other dedicated web album software is probably better) and slide shows (which can be made into standalone executables which you could run from a CD or send via email.

I see that, I'm gonna have to experiment and find out what else it can do...

Thanks Mary, right now I'm just using one database for off line CD's...

Re: *Cataloging photos with ThumbsPlus*

Thanks for the advice Mr. S. It's been almost a year since I have been snapping photos with my 2100. The collection is getting out of hand, spread over two hard drives and operating systems. You think Thumbs Plus is good?

I need to decide on media (CD) that I can trust. I have heard the best is Kodak and Mitsui, in that order. I will probably be posting more on this later, since I'm learning a lot from other forums. Anyone care to add to this I would sure like to hear it.

Again, thanks for the good advice!!

Question...

Do you notice a LOT of missing HD space when you use ThumbsPlus? After I would launch the program, about 400 megs would disappear until I would reboot my computer... Is something wrong, or is tihs normal?

Re: Question...

Hi Forrest,

To make this more interesting, what OS are you using? 98- ME- 2k- or XP. I plan on looking into Thumbs+

Thanks,

Jim

Tim, I'm pushing 15,000 photos...

I used to burn a CD every other month with my C2100...

Now that i'm using the E-10 a lot it seems I get 650-700 mgs worth to burn every other week...gonna have quite the CD collection...

I'm gonna keep them in a large CD wallet that holds over 140 CD's...like a big binder...they'll take up less room...and I also always burn a second copy that I keep at my sisters just in case...

I assumed it's some kind of caching ... but I couldn't find a file that was taking up the space, and it was pretty weird how it would disappear after I rebooted. I decided not to use ThumbsPlus...

2000. This was the main reason I didn't go with TP. I made my own in Access instead ( which is what TP is using... ).

I have no problems with it...especially nice cause I got it for free for a POTM at Steves along with a Minolta S304 that I sold which helped pay for my E-10...

I imagine with your D60 you'll be burning a lot of CD's also...

I like being able to keep track of what I have, I understand ThumbsPlus has many other functions also I'll have to tinker with...

Congradulations! Must be some kind of bug in my pc ... the OS and all the software came preinstalled, and a few other little things don't work.

Definately -- when it finallly arrives. Things didn't work out at CDW, and my expected ship date at Ritz is 6/30.

I do too. Although most of what I shoot is cr@p, and never gets seen. I made an Access database to track my portfolio images, how I've distributed them, and so on. So far I have to enter them manually ( so it's only the portfolio shots ), but it works very well for me.

How do you add the keywords? I can't find anywhere how to add keywords to files?

You’re replying to a twenty year old thread. You’ll have better luck if you start your own thread.
