Powershot A590is Max SD size?

After over 3 years, my wife's Canon A95 Powershot is not sending a signal to the sensor. Taking black photos, but the LCD seems to work, shows the photos already taken... the menu... etc. But shooting only produces a black image with maybe a hint of a blurry line running through it. I called a local repair shop and was told we were lucky it lasted more than 2 years... and that it wasn't worth fixing.. etc.

Picking up a new budget compact. Pretty much settled on a Canon A590is but I can't for the life of me, find what the max SD card it will take. All the specs just say it'll take SD and SDHC, but don't list the max GB size. Anyone know?

For the money, is this a decent point and shoot?

It's stunning how difficult it's been to get an answer to this. Not even the sales person knew, nor was it even listed in the manual.

Just got an 8GB.

So... nevermind.

That's the answer. Whatever the max is for the format...that's the max the camera will work with.

So it's 2GB for SD and 32GB for SDHC.

taken from wikipedia.org

"SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity, SD 2.0) is an extension of the SD standard that appeared in June 2006. SDHC allows standard-compliant capacities in excess of 2 GB. SDHC cards are often formatted with the FAT32 file system. It uses the same physical and electrical form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing), thus theoretically reaching a maximum capacity of up to 2 TB (2048 GB). Currently the SD Card association has artificially defined the maximum limit of SDHC capacity to 32 GB, however the SD card specification states that "SD Memory Cards with a capacity greater than 32 GB will be available with updated versions of [the specification]." SDHC cards work only in SDHC compatible devices, but standard SD cards work in both SD and SDHC devices. The SDHC trademark is licensed to ensure compatibility."

Thanks for the info, etc. but the sales guys at the electronic stores couldn't answer the question and implied just because it says SDHC.. doesn't mean they'll support ANY size in that category. One said he'd be surprised if it supported over a 16GB card and may not even support that.

8GB seems to work fine. But, it seems like such a simple question should have been easier to get answered by those selling the product. I mean... I have an audio recording device that "Supports SDHC" cards, but over 4GBs it appears it matters which brand you buy. So... with this product merely printing "SDHC Supported" on the box, doesn't mean that it will support ANY size. The manufacturer of this audio device only guarantees SDHC up to 4GB.

So, you can see why I'd ask the question can't you?

Clearly, a place never to shop at again.

Just as an FYI, if the camera says "SDHC" and has the official SDHC logo, it MUST support ALL SDHC capacities. Companies license the logo and the the card manufacturers consortium only licenses it if the equipment fully complies with the standard.
