CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

I was testing my a700 with two Interfit 150w at the ridiculous speed 1/5000 at f4.0

here the result

I have some great result too at the max speed of 1/8000 and f2.8

Re: CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

Ok, here we go, nothing complicated.

  • Hot shoe. I used a WEIN Safe Sync HSXLD With PC connector (I think you can do it with any Optical Hot shoe trigger)

  • Pocket Wizards for your external flashes

  • SONY HVL-F56AM or HVL-F58AM Mounted on A700 or A900

Mount one pocket wizard on the Optical Hot Shoe Trigger ... well you know what to do next, but NO POCKET WIZARD MOUNTED OR CONNECTED TO THE CAMERA

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU HAVE TO SET YOUR SONY FLASH TO MANUAL TO AVOID THE TTL PREFLASH AND THE FLASH HEAD TO NORMAL POSITION (the high speed sync does not work when the Flash head is in bounced position).

When you are shooting outside with strong sunlight, keep the Optical trigger close to your camera in order to capture the light from your Sony Flash.

Also, use some black electrical tapes to cover the optical sensor on your external flashes

Here my setting with 2 Interfit 150w

And one pict taking at 1/8000th sec the flashes were about 5 feet from the backgound (see EXIF)

This weekend I'll try it with more powerful flashes.

That's ALL now you can shoot at any speed, and please reply to this post and let me know your results.

Why are you bothering with the PC connector when the PW sits on the trigger's shoe?

Robert you're right it's no required to use the PC Connector, but since I had some issues when using the PW sitting on the hot shoe (loose connection), so I don't mind having the PC connector as backup.

Re: CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

Awesome. I have a couple of questions, since I've don't have much insight as to how this works.

1) Do you think that any Sony-hot shoe flash (like Sigma) that has a manual mode would work?

2) Do you think other radio devices, besides Pocketwizards, would work?

3) How does this affect the power of your flashes, if at all?

Thanks a bunch, d

From what I have already tested I know only Both Sony HVL-F56AM and HVL-58AM work, since they are HS compatible with a700 and a900

2) Do you think other radio devices, besides Pocketwizards, would work?

I "THINK" any radio devices mounted on THE OPTICAL Hot shoe trigger would work.

3) How does this affect the power of your flashes?

I cannot give you any numbers, but keep in mind with more shutter speed you'll have less power from your flashes, the key is your flashes will be still in sync

Thanks a bunch, d

Re: CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

Gotcha about the shutter speed vs. power, but I probably won't use much more than 1/1000. Pretty incredible trick. I can't wait to try. thx

Re: CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

BTW, for those wondering, the Sigma 500 DG super does do high speed sync.

Re: CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

You're very welcome headofdestiny, I don't really need that much speed either, I posted the pict at the "suicidal" speed of 1/8000 just to show that the trick works at that speed.

Not yet. I just looked it up. I use on-camera flash so rarely that I wasn't sure if my Sigma did HSS or not. lol. In fact, I'll have to dust it off, since I think I've only used the flash once.

Are you able to dial down the flash power on the on-camera flash to a low enough point that it doesn't affect exposure?

Re: CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

Great technique and thank you for sharing.

All that pocket wizard gear is still cheaper than a leaf shutter lens from hasselblad and the body that goes with it.

But I guess there is a catch on all this: you need of pointing the Sony flash mounted on the camera toward your subject on order to have the high speed working.
Am I correct?
thank you again for sharing.

Re: CC - Sony a700 High Speed Sync with External Flash

You're welcome Andrea.

All you need is to

1- have the Sony flash mounted on your camera in normal position, the High Speed Sync Does not work in bounced position. Anyway in high speed you'll never reach your subject with your on camera flash. The "Sony 56AM or 58AM mounted on camera" is used only to trigger the Optical HS with the PW mounted in it

2- Keep the Optical hot shoe with the PW mounted on it in range of your Sony Flash Light.

You can have your external strobes plus your subject as far as the PW radio signal can go.

GBsoftware Inc can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think HSS is disable when you tilt or rotate the flash head.

I wonder if you could tape the Optical trigger directly to the lens on the front of your flash, and then block the rest of the flash's output with electrical tape or something, and then run a pc cord from the Optical trigger to a Pocketwizard in your....pocket?

Yes you're right HSS is disabled when you rotate or Tilt it. Just keep it in normal position

LOL that's should work, if you don't need the light from your on camera flash on your subject
