Ricoh Lens Cap for LX3

I modified the Ricoh lens cap to fit the LX3 in a different manner than previously described. I machined it down about 3 mm .. just to where the tabs are that hold the springs in place. I then epoxied it to the front lens ring. It now screws on and off just as the front lens ring did originally. Works perfectly without any other modifications. I have some photos and more detailed instructions if anyone is interested. All I need is someone to tell me the best way to post them. I do not have a gallery of my own.

Re: Ricoh Lens Cap for LX3

This is my first attempt at posting photos. Please bear with me.

1. Sand down rim until you get to the tabs that hold the springs.

2. Sand the surface of the front lens ring slightly to allow epoxy adhesion. Mark top of ring.

3. Line up ring top with cap top and epoxy together. Use slow setting epoxy to allow precise alignment.

4. In the photos showing the cap on the camera, I have not screwed it on fully since the epoxy had not cured. When tightened, it aligns much better.

Re: Q for Waterdoc

The cap sits behind the lens so it cannot cast a shadow.

What is not clear? Here is a photo of the back side of the completed modification. It looks "factory". Do you have any specific questions?

Re: Ricoh Lens Cap for LX3

One other comment. Of course, when the lens retracts for Tele shots the blades will collapse over the lens. If this happens, it is a simple matter to unscrew the device. I did not use the original front lens ring for this project. I purchased several from Panasonic.

With the other modification previously described (the push-on) one has to add "sliders" to the blades. However, it does allow Tele with the cap in place. I plan on working with my screw-on cap and see how I can modify it to work in both full T & W.

One additional comment: If you want to prevent any significant collapsing of the blades ( very slight vignetting at full T) when going to T all you have to do is add some good quality felt pads to the inner side of the blades as shown below. The pads should be as close to the outer aspect of the blades as possible without touching the spring.

I was referring to a possible "eclipse" due to the lens cap's flaps blocking the inboard flash light.

Nice job on the modification Waterdoc.

What tool did you use to sand down the rim of the LX-1?

Thanks, Courtney
