Can I assume that you have to have the camera connected to the computer in order for this to work? I did not see any documentation, and I did not try it. If so, it really limits the usefulness, although I don't put a whole lot of value in shooting video from an SLR anyway. Pretty cool, nonetheless.

Guys, be warned, download an exe from unknown source can be very dangerous.

Adlika, I know you mean it fine, the site looks also quite safe, but please, if you uploaded it there, try to publish also some checksum, for example md5sum , otherwise someone can tamper it.
No offense ..

Live view... what about 1000D, 40D, 1D(s) Mk III?

So it's basically capturing the same stream as the "live view" and saving it to a file. I wonder if this would work with the other live view cameras like the 1000D, 40D, 1D(s) Mk III?

I'm sure that this will probably have the "Jello Motion" artifact, but it's still a very neat trick.

It may not be all that useful for "real" video, but this may well be the start to an answer to a question I had on using the 450D for stop-motion animation (see this thread http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1031&thread=30753846 ) without destroying the mechanical shutter.

Now THAT is interesting!

Re: Canon 450D records video too!

I tried a couple of clips and uppd them to youtube, but the divx compression ruined them

Anyone got the videos playing faster than real time? Like in fast-forward?

The high-quality versions were quote nice and clear. Yes they were going in FF, probably because they were tagged with the wrong framerate.

Re: Canon 450D records video too!

The video has a bit of an erratic framerate when I tried it as well, not sure if converting the video might fix this or if it's just a problem with the program. Either way it's still pretty neat to play around with.

Re: Canon 450D records video too!

Try more light / fast lens. I bet it needs to be at least 1/framerate to be "realtime" rather than FF ( at least until they fix the program ).

That seems a little closer to the truth after I tested again: In apeture priority mode, it would switch to different apetures to try and maintain the shutter speed? If I pointed it at something bright it would switch apetures and in the video there would be a little break/discontinuity for a half second or less.

In manual mode, if I set the apeture/shutter speed, that's what it is for the whole video. Thus, I set it to 1/25 second to match the 25 frames per second that the video information showed, and it seemed pretty consistent. So how the software handles exposure is a little mysterious, but you can at least get a pretty consistent output by setting the exposure beforehand in Manual.

Another 450D Video test - Blue Jays

I am getting a capture rate of 25 frames per second now with version 1.2 of the software. The author has added some nice features to this free software. Took video of blue jays with an astro modified camera using a color correcting filter on the camera lens and posted it on Youtube here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shCCacbqa_s&fmt=18

The original video is much better than the video displayed on Youtube. It was my first time posting to Youtube. Never expected to be taking video with my 450D! Should come in handy for planetary, lunar and solar imaging:)
